3. Weekly cycle	Two or three sessions of 60–90 minutes: teach the chapter, then graded questions up to board level, a practice set and an error log of every mistake and its fix.
4. Timed papers	Full three-hour papers in the ICSE format before each school exam. Lost marks are sorted by cause, and parents get a short update.

ICSE Class 10 Maths syllabus for 2027

The ICSE 2027 Mathematics (51) syllabus has seven units. The table summarises CISCE's Regulations and Syllabus, ICSE 2027 (Mathematics document dated February 2025), checked on 30 September 2026. CISCE does not give marks for each unit.

1. Commercial Mathematics	GST with discounts, list price, profit and loss, and inverse cases, including SGST and CGST. Banking: recurring deposits, I = P × n(n + 1)/(2 × 12) × r/100 and MV = P × n + I. Shares and dividends: face value, market value, dividend, income and return (no brokerage or fractional shares).
2. Algebra	Linear inequations with the solution set on the number line; quadratic equations and the nature of roots; ratio and proportion (componendo, dividendo and related properties); the factor and remainder theorems (degree up to 3); 2 × 2 matrices; AP and GP; coordinate geometry: reflection and invariant points, section and mid-point formulae, slope and the equation of a line.
3. Geometry	Similarity, including areas, maps and models; loci; circle properties (angle, cyclic, tangent and secant); constructions of tangents and of circumscribed and inscribed circles for a triangle and a regular hexagon.
4. Mensuration	Cylinder, cone and sphere: surface area, volume, melting and recasting, and combined solids (no frustum).
5. Trigonometry	The three identities; heights and distances using trigonometric tables, with no more than two right-angled triangles.
6. Statistics	Mean by three methods, median and mode; histograms and the less-than ogive; quartiles and interquartile range.
7. Probability	Sample space, events and simple problems on single events.

CISCE says circle theorem proofs are to be taught unless marked otherwise, so students should practise writing the proofs as well as using the theorems.

The 2027 paper pattern, and what changed

The ICSE 2027 Maths paper is three hours for 80 marks, and internal assessment adds 20. The format below is from CISCE's latest specimen paper, for 2026 (cisce.org), which says the board paper will keep the same format. There was no 2027 specimen when we checked.

What changed: CISCE's 2026 syllabus gave the Class 10 paper "two and a half hours"; the 2027 syllabus says "three hours", and the 2026 specimen already shows three hours. Older guides may still quote 2½ hours. When we compared the Class 10 topic lists in the 2026 and 2027 documents, we found no other change. The specimen also says mathematical tables are provided and that "omission of essential working will result in loss of marks".

How ICSE Maths differs from CBSE Maths

ICSE Class 10 Maths is wider than CBSE, especially in commercial maths and coordinate geometry. Each ICSE topic below is in the CISCE 2027 syllabus and absent from CBSE's 2026–27 Class 10 Mathematics curriculum on cbseacademic.nic.in (both checked on 30 September 2026).

The 20-mark internal assessment

ICSE Maths internal assessment is 20 marks for assignments done in school during the year. According to the 2027 syllabus:

At least two assignments, as prescribed by the subject teacher.
Two independent markers: the subject teacher gives up to 10 marks, and an external examiner (who can be a teacher from the same school who does not teach that section) gives up to 10.
Five criteria: preparation, concepts, computation, presentation and understanding, each graded from 4 marks down to 0.
Suggested topics include surveying bank accounts and interest rates, planning a home budget, following shares and dividends in a newspaper, and finding the largest open box that can be folded from a 10 cm square.

A tutor can help your child choose a sensible problem, check the maths and improve the presentation, but the work must be your child's own.

From our tutors: assignments often lose marks on "presentation" and "understanding" because they stop at an answer. We ask students to end each one with two or three sentences on what they found and where the method could be used.

Three worked ICSE examples

These are the kind of questions our tutors set on ICSE-only topics. Each answer has been checked by calculation.

1. GST: an article listed at ₹5,000 is bought by a shopkeeper at a 20% discount and sold to a consumer at a 10% discount. GST is 18% and both sales are within one state. Find the GST the shopkeeper pays to the government and the amount the consumer pays.

Shopkeeper's cost = 5,000 − 20% = ₹4,000, so input GST = 18% of 4,000 = ₹720.
Selling price = 5,000 − 10% = ₹4,500, so output GST = 18% of 4,500 = ₹810.
GST paid to the government = 810 − 720 = ₹90 (CGST ₹45 and SGST ₹45).
The consumer pays 4,500 + 810 = ₹5,310.
Answer: ₹90; ₹5,310. Common error: charging GST on the list price instead of the discounted price.

2. Shares and dividends: ₹45,000 is invested in ₹100 shares quoted at ₹125, and the company pays a 10% dividend. Find the number of shares, the annual income and the return.

Number of shares = 45,000 ÷ 125 = 360.
Income = 360 × 10% × 100 = ₹3,600.
Return = (3,600 ÷ 45,000) × 100 = 8%.
Answer: 360 shares; ₹3,600; 8%. Common error: taking the dividend on the market value (which gives ₹4,500). The dividend is paid on the face value.

3. Matrices: if A = [2 1; 3 −1] (rows in order), show that A² − A − 5I = O.

Row 1 of A²: (2×2 + 1×3, 2×1 + 1×(−1)) = (7, 1). Row 2: (3×2 + (−1)×3, 3×1 + (−1)(−1)) = (3, 4).
A² − A = [7 − 2, 1 − 1; 3 − 3, 4 + 1] = [5 0; 0 5] = 5I, so A² − A − 5I = O.
Common error: squaring each element separately, giving [4 1; 9 1]. Matrix multiplication goes row by column.

Common mistakes in ICSE Class 10 Maths

Most of the mistakes our tutors see cost method marks rather than showing a gap in understanding.

Recurring deposits with n in years. n is the number of months: ₹1,500 a month for 2 years at 8% gives n = 24, I = ₹3,000 and MV = ₹39,000.
GST split wrongly: within one state, CGST and SGST are each half, and the tax paid is output minus input.
Remainder theorem signs: dividing by (x + 2) gives the remainder f(−2), not f(2).
Reflection from memory: (x, y) reflected in x = a is (2a − x, y). Points on the mirror line are invariant.
Loci with no arcs or labels: construction arcs must stay visible, and each locus should be named.
Ogives plotted at class marks: plot against upper class boundaries, and read the median at n/2.
Missing working: the paper warns that this loses marks even when the answer is right.

From our tutors: in Section B, students lose time by choosing their four questions halfway through the paper. We train them to use the 15 minutes of reading time to rank the seven questions and to start with the one they are surest of, and we rehearse this routine in every timed paper.
