Ajay Vatsyayan Classes provides one-to-one Class 10 tuition in Gurgaon for CBSE and ICSE students, at your home or online. A tutor from our Home Tutors Team starts with a short diagnostic, builds a plan around your child's school calendar and the board exam dates, and teaches Maths, Science, English, Social Science and languages subject by subject. You meet the tutor in a free demo class before you decide.
We have taught in Gurgaon (Gurugram) for 12+ years, with 25,000+ students, 500+ verified tutors and families from 50+ Gurgaon schools. This page explains how the CBSE Class 10 exam works in 2026–27, including the two board exams, how ICSE Class 10 differs, and how to judge whether home tutors in Gurgaon for Class 10 are the right choice for your child. For deeper reading, our first guide covers the CBSE Class 10 two board exams in detail.
Our Class 10 tuition runs in four steps: a diagnostic, a written plan, a weekly teaching cycle, and regular paper practice with review. Every student loses marks in different places, so the plan starts from evidence.
The first session is a short test, not a lecture. The tutor sets questions from chapters already done at school, watches how the student works, and then goes through the answers together. The aim is to find out why marks are being lost. In Class 10, lost marks usually fall into five types:
Here is the kind of question we use. For what values of k does 2x² + kx + 8 = 0 have equal roots? A student with good habits writes the condition first: equal roots need the discriminant b² − 4ac = 0, so k² − 4 × 2 × 8 = 0, k² = 64 and k = 8 or k = −8. A student who only remembers "equal roots means D = 0" often writes k = 8 and loses the second value.
The tutor then writes a plan with the family. It lists the chapters in order, the school's unit tests, half-yearly and pre-board dates, the internal assessment tasks, and the board exam window. For CBSE students it also marks the optional second board exam in May, so the family can decide early whether it is part of the plan.
A typical week with two or three sessions, adjusted to the school timetable:
| Session | What happens | Student's own work before the next session |
|---|---|---|
| Session 1 (60–90 min) | Teach or reteach the chapter the school is on, using NCERT (CBSE) or the prescribed syllabus (ICSE), then graded questions from easy to board level | A short practice set without solutions, written in full as in the exam |
| Session 2 (60–90 min) | Check the set, fix the mistakes, then board-style questions: case-based, assertion–reason and long answers | A timed mini-test on the chapter |
| Session 3 (optional, 60 min) | Mixed revision of older chapters, or a second subject such as Science or Social Science | Update an error log: the mistake, its type and the correct method |
From the second term, the student writes full sample papers under exam conditions. The tutor marks them against the official marking scheme and sorts every lost mark: did not know, made a slip, ran out of time, or did not write it the way marks are given. Each needs a different fix.
From our tutors: the habit that helps Class 10 students most is writing every step, even when the answer seems obvious. Board marking schemes give marks for steps, so a student who jumps to the answer and makes one slip can lose the whole question, while a student who shows the working keeps most of the marks.

Each main subject is marked out of 100: 80 for the board exam and 20 for internal assessment by the school. The facts below come from CBSE's 2026–27 Secondary Curriculum on cbseacademic.nic.in and CBSE notices on cbse.gov.in, checked on 29 September 2026. Rules can change, so always check the latest circulars.
CBSE announced the scheme in a press release dated 25 June 2025, and 2026 was its first year: the main exam ran from 17 February to 11 March 2026 and the second exam from 15 to 21 May 2026. CBSE's circular on the list of candidates for the 2027 exams (17 September 2026) confirms the scheme continues for the current Class 10 batch. The 2027 date sheet had not been published when we last checked (29 September 2026).
| First board exam | Second board exam | |
|---|---|---|
| Who takes it | Compulsory for every Class 10 student | Optional. For students who passed and want to improve, and for students placed in the compartment category |
| When | February–March (in 2026: 17 February to 11 March) | May (in 2026: 15 to 21 May) |
| Subjects | All subjects in the student's scheme of studies | Improvement in up to three subjects from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages |
| How marks combine | For regular students in 2026, CBSE used the better of the two performances for the final result | |
Other points parents ask about, from CBSE's 2025 press release, its 14 February 2026 clarification and its 18 July 2026 results press release:
In practice, the second exam is a safety net, not a reason to prepare less for the first. It comes only weeks after the main exam, it falls when Class 11 is starting, and it can only be used for three subjects.
For the 2027 board exams, a Class 10 student takes five compulsory board subjects: two languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. CBSE allows up to two optional board subjects on top (a maximum of seven). The pass mark is 33%.
| Subject (code) | Board exam | Internal assessment | How the 80 marks are split |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics Standard (041) or Basic (241) | 80 marks, 3 hours | 20: pen-paper tests and multiple assessment 10, portfolio 5, lab practical 5 | Number Systems 6, Algebra 20, Coordinate Geometry 6, Geometry 15, Trigonometry 12, Mensuration 10, Statistics and Probability 11 |
| Science (086) | 80 marks, 3 hours | 20: periodic assessment 5, multiple assessment 5, portfolio 5, practical work 5 | Chemical Substances 25, World of Living 25, Natural Phenomena 12, Effects of Current 13, Natural Resources 5 |
| Social Science (087) | 80 marks, 3 hours | 20: periodic assessment 5, multiple assessment 5, subject enrichment project 5, portfolio 5 | History 20, Geography 20, Political Science 20, Economics 20 (map questions carry 5 of these marks) |
| English Language and Literature (184) | 80 marks | 20, including 5 for listening and speaking | Reading 20, Writing and Grammar 20, Literature 40 |
| Hindi Course A or B, Sanskrit, French and other languages | 80 marks | 20 | As set out in each language's syllabus |
Two more points from the 2026–27 documents. First, CBSE says about half of each board paper is competency-focused: case-based, source-based, data and application questions. Second, the Science and Social Science papers are divided into sections by discipline (Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Science; History, Geography, Political Science and Economics in Social Science). For the 2026 exams CBSE told students to answer each section only in its own part of the answer book, and warned that answers written in the wrong section would not be marked. CBSE has confirmed there is no change in the question paper design and assessment pattern for 2026–27, and the 2026–27 sample papers keep the same sections.
Students in Class 10 in 2026–27 stay on the existing scheme and can choose Mathematics Standard (041) or Mathematics Basic (241). Both papers are 80 marks and three hours and cover the same chapters; the Basic paper has a larger share of direct recall and understanding questions (about 75%, against about 54% in Standard). Families should know one practical point: Class 11 Mathematics normally expects Standard, so a student who might take Maths in Class 11 should discuss the choice with the school before the list of candidates is filed.
CBSE's 2026–27 curriculum also announces a change for younger students. From 2026–27, the Standard/Basic split is being discontinued for new batches. Instead, all students take one common Mathematics and Science paper, and can choose an optional "Advanced" paper of 25 marks and one hour in Maths, Science or both. For board exams, this starts with the Class 10 batch of 2027–28. A student who scores 50% or more on an Advanced paper gets it recorded on the marksheet, but the marks are not added to the total. Our guide to Class 10 Maths Standard vs Basic covers the choice in detail.
CBSE's press release of 29 June 2026 says there is no change for students in Class 10 in 2026–27: they continue with two languages. Students in Class 9 in 2026–27 now study three languages, at least two of them Indian languages, and the third is assessed only by the school, with no board exam in it when they reach Class 10.
ICSE is the Class 10 exam of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). Compared with CBSE, it has more subjects, English and History–Geography carry more weight, and Science is examined as three separate papers. The facts below come from the ICSE 2027 Regulations and subject syllabuses on cisce.org, checked on 29 September 2026.
| ICSE Class 10 (exam year 2027) | |
|---|---|
| Group I (compulsory) | English; a Second Language; History, Civics and Geography. Each is 80% external exam, 20% internal assessment |
| Group II (any two or three) | Includes Mathematics, Science, Economics, Commercial Studies, a Modern Foreign Language, a Classical Language and Environmental Science. 80% external, 20% internal. CISCE expects most students to take both Mathematics and Science |
| Group III (any one or two) | Includes Computer Applications, Economic Applications, Commercial Applications, Art, Performing Arts, Home Science, Cookery and Physical Education. 50% external, 50% internal |
| Minimum | Six subjects. A pass needs the pass standard in at least five subjects, including English |
| Pass mark | 33% in each subject |
| Mathematics | One paper of three hours, 80 marks, plus 20 marks internal assessment. Class 10 units: Commercial Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability |
| Science | Three papers: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Each is two hours and 80 marks, with 20 marks for practical work |
| Improvement exam | In the same year as the main exam, in up to two subjects. The higher of the two marks counts. Students marked absent in the main exam are not eligible |
| Grades | 1 (highest) to 9; grades 8 and 9 are a fail |
For tutoring, the main differences are volume and writing. ICSE Maths adds commercial topics such as GST and banking, ICSE Science has three separate syllabuses with more factual detail, and ICSE English and History–Geography reward longer, well-organised written answers. See our ICSE Class 10 maths home tutor in Gurgaon page for maths-specific support.
Our CBSE Class 10 tuition in Gurgaon covers every main subject, and we teach the ICSE equivalents too. Most families start with Maths and Science and add others before exams if needed.
The CBSE Class 10 chapters are Real Numbers; Polynomials; Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables; Quadratic Equations; Arithmetic Progressions; Coordinate Geometry; Triangles; Circles; Introduction to Trigonometry and its applications (heights and distances); Areas Related to Circles; Surface Areas and Volumes; Statistics; and Probability. Algebra carries the most marks (20 of 80), so it gets the most practice time.
How we teach it: step-by-step working, a formula sheet the student builds, previous-year and sample paper practice chapter by chapter, and timed sets from the second term. For CBSE-specific help, see our CBSE Class 10 maths home tutor in Gurgaon page and our CBSE Class 10 Maths formula sheet.
In the CBSE 2026–27 syllabus, a few topics are taught but assessed only in school, not in the board exam: periodic classification of elements, evolution, and the electric motor, electromagnetic induction and the generator.
How we teach it: diagrams drawn and labelled by the student, numericals set out with units, and practicals linked to theory. A typical electricity question: resistors of 3 Ω and 6 Ω are connected in parallel across a 6 V battery; find the total current. The combined resistance is 1 ÷ (1/3 + 1/6) = 2 Ω, so the current is 6 ÷ 2 = 3 A. Students who write the formula, substitute with units and box the answer get full marks; students who write "3" with no working risk losing some. Read more in our guide to CBSE Class 10 physics chapters.
CBSE English Language and Literature (184) has three parts: reading comprehension (20), writing and grammar (20), and literature from the First Flight and Footprints without Feet textbooks (40). Some schools offer English Communicative (101) instead.
How we teach it: weekly grammar practice, clear formats for letters and analytical paragraphs, and literature answers that quote the text and stay within the word limit.
How we teach it: timelines and concept maps, regular map practice, and answers written to the word limits in the sample paper (about 40, 60 and 120 words for 2-, 3- and 5-mark answers).
We support Hindi (Course A and Course B), Sanskrit and French: grammar, writing tasks, textbook chapters, poetry and translation, with model answers matched to the marking scheme.
We follow the school's timeline while preparing the student for the board exam, internal assessment and practicals at the same time. A typical CBSE Class 10 year has five phases. Schools in Gurgaon differ in their dates, so each plan is adjusted to the student's own school.
| Phase | Usual months | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Concept building | April–August | Chapter-by-chapter teaching alongside school; fixing Class 9 gaps; first internal assessment tasks |
| 2. Practice and school tests | September–November | Chapter tests, half-yearly preparation, sample paper sections, the error log |
| 3. Pre-board readiness | December–January | Full-syllabus revision, full sample papers under time, practicals and projects completed |
| 4. First board exam | February–March | Paper-by-paper revision in the gaps between exams; calm, short sessions |
| 5. Second exam (if chosen) | March–May | Focused revision for up to three subjects, alongside the start of Class 11 |
From our tutors: the most common Class 10 problem we see is not a weak chapter but a weak routine. Students who revise a little every week from September usually reach the pre-boards calm; students who save everything for January feel behind in every subject at once.
Our month-by-month guide, the CBSE Class 10 board exam study plan, gives more detail, and our Class 10 crash course for CBSE and ICSE suits students who start late in the year.

A home tutor suits students who need specific gaps fixed, are falling behind a batch's pace, or have a heavy school schedule. A coaching centre suits students who are already on track and enjoy learning in a group. Some families use both.
| One-to-one Class 10 home tutor | Class 10 coaching centre in Gurgaon | |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Set by the student; slower on weak chapters, faster on strong ones | Set by the batch; the same for everyone |
| Working and presentation | The tutor watches every step, so presentation errors are caught early | The teacher usually sees final answers or test scores |
| School and board | Plan built around the student's own school, board, internal assessment and exam dates | A common plan for many schools |
| Travel | None for home tuition; online also possible | Commute to the centre, often several evenings a week |

Both. Our Class 10 tutors visit homes across Gurgaon, including DLF, Golf Course Road, Sohna Road, South City, New Gurgaon and Dwarka Expressway, and also teach online one-to-one. Many families use home sessions for teaching and online sessions during exam weeks.
No. The first exam in February–March is compulsory for every student. The second exam in May is optional and lets students who have passed improve up to three subjects from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages. A student who misses three or more subjects in the first exam cannot take the second.
Class 10 students in 2026–27 can still choose either. Standard suits a student who may take Maths in Class 11; Basic suits a student who is sure they will not. Discuss it with the school before the list of candidates is filed. From the 2027–28 Class 10 batch, CBSE is replacing this choice with one common paper and an optional Advanced paper.
Yes. ICSE has more subjects, three separate Science papers and more written work in English and History–Geography, so our tutors plan ICSE students separately. We support students from CISCE schools across Gurgaon.
Yes. Tutors practise CBSE and ICSE sample and previous-year papers, mark them against the official marking scheme, and help with practicals, lab activities, portfolios and projects, which make up the 20 internal marks in each main subject.
