In ISC vs CBSE for Class 11–12, neither board is simply "better" for JEE or NEET. Both are accepted qualifying exams for JEE Main and NEET (UG). In Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths their chapter lists are almost the same. And both leave out the same few exam topics, such as logic gates and the p-block elements. The real differences are in how the marks are made up and how the papers are written. ISC puts 30 marks in each science on practical, project and practical file work, and 20 marks in Maths on two projects with a viva. It also gives students more reading and writing in English. CBSE follows the NCERT textbooks that JEE and NEET preparation is usually built around. The right choice depends on your child, the school and the subjects, not on the board's name.
This guide is part of our ISC home tutors in Gurgaon series for Class 11 and 12 families. Every figure below comes from an official document: the CISCE ISC Year 2027 Regulations and Syllabuses, the CBSE 2026–27 Senior Secondary curriculum, the JEE (Main) 2026 syllabus and Information Bulletin, and the NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin with the NMC syllabus. We say where a rule has changed recently or has not yet been confirmed for 2027.
ISC is the Class 12 exam of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). CBSE's Class 12 exam is the Senior School Certificate Examination. Here are the headline rules from each board's current documents.
| Feature | ISC (CISCE), Year 2027 documents | CBSE, 2026–27 curriculum |
|---|---|---|
| Compulsory subject | English (or Modern English), two papers | A language (English or Hindi must be among the main five) |
| Number of subjects | English plus four or five electives; no more than six subjects in all | Five main subjects, with an optional sixth (and seventh) |
| Physics, Chemistry, Biology | Theory 70 + practical 15 + project 10 + practical file 5 | Theory 70 + practical 30 (which includes a small project) |
| Mathematics | Theory 80 + project work 20 (two projects with viva) | Theory 80 + internal assessment 20 (periodic tests and activities) |
| Theory paper length | 3 hours plus 15 minutes' reading time | 3 hours |
| Pass mark | 35% in each subject | 33% in each subject; in practical subjects, 33% in theory and in practical separately |
| Class 11 exam | Held by the school; promotion needs at least 35% in five subjects including English, and 75% attendance | Held by the school |
| Improvement chance | Improvement exam in June–July of the same year (up to three subjects in 2026) | Supplementary exam, as notified by CBSE each year |

The most useful fact for JEE and NEET families is how similar the two boards now are. Both use the same Class 12 unit names in all four subjects. Both also give almost the same weight to each area. The tables below set the ISC 2027 Class 12 theory marks beside CBSE's 2026–27 marks.
| Units | ISC 2027 | CBSE 2026–27 |
|---|---|---|
| Electrostatics; Current Electricity | 14 | 16 |
| Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism; Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents | 16 | 17 |
| Electromagnetic Waves; Optics | 2 + 18 = 20 | 18 |
| Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter; Atoms and Nuclei | 7 + 6 = 13 | 12 |
| Electronic Devices | 7 | 7 |
The ISC Physics syllabus is written in more detail than CBSE's. It often states exactly what is in and out. In Class 11, for example, it says that projectile motion on an inclined plane is not included, that the conical pendulum is excluded, and that connected-body problems should not involve two pulleys. It also says numerical problems are included in all topics unless they are specifically left out. The fine print is worth reading, and our guide to the ISC Class 12 Physics syllabus 2027 goes through it unit by unit.
| Area (chapters) | ISC 2027 | CBSE 2026–27 |
|---|---|---|
| Physical: Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics | 25 | 23 (7 + 9 + 7) |
| Inorganic: d- and f-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds | 14 | 14 (7 + 7) |
| Organic: Haloalkanes and Haloarenes; Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers; Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids; Nitrogen compounds (Amines); Biomolecules | 31 | 33 (6 + 6 + 8 + 6 + 7) |
In Class 11, both boards teach the same nine Chemistry units. They run from Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry to Hydrocarbons.
| Unit | ISC 2027 | CBSE 2026–27 |
|---|---|---|
| Relations and Functions | 10 | 8 |
| Algebra (matrices, determinants) | 10 | 10 |
| Calculus | 35 | 35 |
| Vectors and Three-Dimensional Geometry | 5 + 6 = 11 | 14 |
| Linear Programming | 5 | 5 |
| Probability | 9 | 8 |
There is one recent change to note. For the 2026 exam, ISC Class 12 Maths had a common Section A (65 marks) and then a choice between two 15-mark sections. Section B covered Vectors, 3D Geometry and Applications of Integrals. Section C covered Application of Calculus, Linear Regression and Linear Programming. The ISC 2027 syllabus drops that choice and lists seven units totalling 80 marks, as in the table. So every ISC 2027 candidate now studies vectors and 3D geometry, which JEE needs, and CISCE's 2027 Mathematics specimen paper has no section choice. Our guide to the ISC Class 12 Maths syllabus 2027 has the details.
| Unit | ISC 2027 | CBSE 2026–27 |
|---|---|---|
| Reproduction | 16 | 16 |
| Genetics and Evolution | 15 | 20 |
| Biology and Human Welfare | 14 | 12 |
| Biotechnology and its Applications | 10 | 12 |
| Ecology and Environment | 15 | 10 |
The ISC Biology syllabus adds one instruction at the top: "All structures (internal and external) are required to be taught along with diagrams." ISC students should expect to draw and label more.
On paper, the chapter lists are very close. The difference is in how the content is written down and tested. The ISC syllabus says more about derivations, exclusions and required diagrams. CBSE's papers are set on the NCERT textbooks and a published mix of question types. Neither board's syllabus reaches the depth of JEE Advanced, and neither was designed to. A JEE or NEET student in either board needs extra problem practice beyond school work.
From our tutors: the ISC students we teach are often strong at writing full, well-set-out answers, because their papers reward it. The habit they most often need to build for JEE and NEET is speed: getting to an answer in two or three minutes without writing everything out. CBSE students often have the opposite gap. They know the NCERT lines well but have had less practice explaining a derivation in their own words. Knowing which gap your child has matters more than which board they are in.
This is where the boards differ most clearly, and it affects how a student spends time across the year.
| Subject | ISC 2027 (non-theory marks) | CBSE 2026–27 (non-theory marks) |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 30: practical exam 15 (3 hours), project 10, practical file 5. The project and file are assessed by a Visiting Examiner. | 30: two experiments 7 + 7, practical record 5, one activity 3, investigatory project 3, viva 5 |
| Chemistry | 30: practical exam 15 (3 hours), project 10, practical file 5 | 30: volumetric analysis 8, salt analysis 8, content-based experiment 6, project 4, class record and viva 4 |
| Biology | 30: practical exam 15 (3 hours), project 10, practical file 5 | 30: major experiment 5, minor experiment 4, slide preparation 5, spotting 7, record and viva 4, investigatory project and viva 5 |
| Mathematics | 20: two projects of 10 marks each (format 1, content 4, findings 2, viva 3). The viva is conducted only by the Visiting Examiner. | 20: periodic tests 10 (best two of three), mathematics activities 10 |
Two practical points follow from this. First, ISC gives projects a fixed, larger share (10 marks in each science and 20 in Maths). That means sustained work spread across Class 12, and it has to be planned around JEE or NEET preparation. Second, ISC Maths has no periodic test component. The 20 non-theory marks depend on two projects and a viva. For ideas and marking criteria, see our guide to ISC Physics project ideas.
CISCE publishes a specimen question paper for each subject and says the board paper will follow its format. Here is the current format for two subjects:
Our guide to ISC specimen papers 2027 explains how to use them through the year.
CBSE describes its papers by the type of thinking tested rather than a fixed list of questions:
CBSE publishes a sample question paper each year. The 2026–27 curriculum refers students to that paper for the exact question pattern.
Neither board paper looks like JEE Main or NEET. The JEE (Main) 2026 Paper 1 had 75 questions (25 each in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry: 20 MCQs and 5 numerical-value questions). It carried 300 marks, with +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one in both sections. NEET (UG) 2026 had 180 MCQs for 720 marks, marked +4 and −1. Board papers reward complete written answers. Entrance papers reward speed and accuracy under negative marking. A student in either board needs separate timed practice for the entrance exam.
| Rule | ISC | CBSE |
|---|---|---|
| Subject pass mark | 35% | 33%; in subjects with practical work, 33% in theory and 33% in practical separately, as well as 33% overall |
| To pass the exam | ISC 2027 Regulations (February 2025): pass in five or six subjects including English, plus a pass grade in SUPW and Community Service. For 2026, CISCE's 16 December 2025 amendment changed this to at least four subjects including English. A 2027 amendment had not been published as of 29 September 2026. | Pass in all five main subjects. A failed subject among the first five can be replaced by the sixth, provided English or Hindi stays in the main five. |
| How results are shown | Marks, with subject standards graded 1 (highest) to 9; 1–6 is a pass with credit, 7–8 a pass, 9 a fail | Marks, with a 9-point positional grade (A1 = top eighth of passed candidates, and so on). No aggregate percentage is shown on the marksheet. |
| Improving marks | Improvement exam in the same year. The 2027 Regulations say up to two subjects; for 2026, CISCE allowed up to three. The theory paper is retaken and practical/project marks are carried forward. The higher of the two marks counts. | Supplementary exam as notified by CBSE |
In 2026, the ISC improvement exam ran from 15 June to 1 July. CISCE's timetable of 21 May 2026 lists Mathematics on 15 June, Chemistry on 17 June, Physics on 19 June and Biology on 22 June. Those weeks also held NEET's 2026 re-exam on 21 June. The improvement exam is a real option for fixing a board score, but it competes with entrance-exam plans for time.

| JEE Main 2026 topic | ISC 2027 | CBSE 2026–27 | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics: logic gates (OR, AND, NOT, NAND, NOR), in the Electronic Devices unit | Not in the theory syllabus | Not in the theory syllabus | Learn separately; it is a short topic |
| Physics: Unit 20, Experimental Skills (for example, galvanometer figure of merit, Young's modulus, surface tension, viscosity, the resonance tube) | Partly covered through practicals | Partly covered through practicals | Revise the listed experiments as theory questions |
| Chemistry: p-Block Elements (Groups 13 to 18) | Not in the theory syllabus | Not in the theory syllabus | Needs dedicated study, usually in Class 12 |
| Chemistry: Unit 20, Principles Related to Practical Chemistry (detection of elements and functional groups, preparations, titrations, salt analysis) | Partly covered through practicals | Partly covered through practicals | Revise the chemistry behind each practical |
Everything else in JEE Main (from sets, complex numbers, sequences, conic sections and 3D geometry to rotational motion, thermodynamics and coordination compounds) is in both boards' Class 11–12 syllabi. JEE asks for more depth and speed on the same chapters. Our guide on Class 12 board Physics and JEE shows how to prepare for both at once.
The NMC's NEET (UG) 2026 syllabus has 20 Physics units, 20 Chemistry units and 10 Biology units. In Physics and Chemistry, its unit list matches JEE Main's. So the same gaps apply: logic gates, p-block elements and the experimental and practical chemistry units.
In Biology, the ten NMC units have the same names as the ten ISC units (five in Class 11 and five in Class 12). They run from Diversity in Living World to Ecology and Environment, and CBSE's units line up in the same way. The differences are at the level of individual lines within chapters. So the best check is to hold your school's syllabus against the NMC document and tick off each line.
A note on 2026: NTA cancelled the NEET (UG) exam held on 3 May 2026, and the valid exam was the re-exam on 21 June 2026. See our guide to the NEET Physics syllabus and exam pattern for the details.
From our tutors: when an ISC student starts NEET Biology practice, the first mock usually shows no gaps in knowledge. It shows gaps in wording. A question built on one line of the NCERT text catches students who learnt the same idea from a different book. We ask ISC students to read the NCERT chapter after finishing the same topic at school, and to mark any sentence they have not seen before.
The JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin lists both CBSE and CISCE by name as qualifying exams. For admission to NITs, IIITs and other GFTIs through JoSAA/CSAB (the "NIT+ system"), the bulletin reproduces this rule:
For programmes based on the Paper 1 rank, the qualifying exam must include Physics, Mathematics, a language, one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or a technical vocational subject, and one more subject. The bulletin refers candidates to the JoSAA Business Rules and CSAB brochure for full details, and these can change each year. You can read the rule in the JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin (section 5.8.1).
What this means in numbers: 75% of five subjects of 100 marks each is 375 marks out of 500. Because the top-20-percentile route is worked out within each board, an ISC student is compared with ISC candidates and a CBSE student with CBSE candidates. Neither board has an in-built advantage under this rule. What matters is doing well in your own board.
The table below does not rank the boards. It links common situations to the board feature that matters, with the reason.
| Your situation | Leans towards | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Already in an ICSE school that offers ISC with your subject combination | Staying in ISC | Same school, teachers and writing style; the syllabus overlap with JEE/NEET is almost the same as CBSE's. Changing school costs time in Class 11. |
| Serious NEET aspirant who wants every hour aligned to NCERT | CBSE, or ISC with deliberate NCERT reading | NEET follows NCERT wording closely. CBSE school work is set on NCERT; ISC students must add it. |
| JEE aspirant who is strong in Maths and enjoys long written solutions | Either | From 2027, ISC Maths covers vectors and 3D for all students, as CBSE does. The JEE gaps (logic gates, p-block) are the same for both boards. |
| Student who needs a lot of time for coaching and mocks in Class 12 | Compare the project load | ISC's 10-mark project in each science and two Maths projects need steady time; CBSE's practical component includes a smaller project. Ask the school how it schedules them. |
| Strong in English and writing; wants a broad subject mix | ISC | ISC has two English papers and a wide list of electives (up to six subjects in all). |
| Worried about the 75% or top-20-percentile rule for NITs | Either | Both routes are judged within your own board. Choose the board where your child can score steadily across five subjects. |
| Wants a lower pass threshold as a safety margin | No real difference | 35% (ISC) against 33% (CBSE, with theory and practical passed separately). JEE and NEET students aim far above both. |
If you are weighing streams as well as boards, our guide on which stream to choose after Class 10 covers the subject choices.
ISC's regulations set out what a student from another board needs to join Class 11 of ISC:
Moving from ICSE to CBSE means adjusting to NCERT-based papers. Moving from CBSE to ISC means adjusting to two English papers and the ISC project and practical file work.
In Gurgaon, ISC Class 11–12 is offered by schools including The Shri Ram School (Aravali and Moulsari), Scottish High International School, Shikshantar School, MatriKiran High School, Lord Jesus Public School (Sector 8) and Lt. Atul Katarya Memorial School. Most Gurugram senior secondary schools are CBSE. Ajay Vatsyayan Classes is not affiliated with any school named here.
Whichever board you choose, a tutor can help most in three places: closing the JEE/NEET syllabus gaps listed above, building exam speed alongside board-style writing, and keeping projects and practical files on schedule. Ajay Vatsyayan Classes has 12+ years of home tutoring in Gurgaon, with Class 11–12 tutors for ISC and CBSE Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. You can read about our JEE Main and Advanced home tutors in Gurgaon and our NEET home tutors in Gurgaon.
Neither is better in itself. JEE Main overlaps both boards almost equally, and both leave out the same few JEE topics, such as logic gates and the p-block elements. Choose on the school, the subject options and how your child learns best.
Both are accepted, and the NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin names the Indian School Certificate Examination directly. The ISC and NMC Biology units have the same names. The practical difference is that NEET follows NCERT wording closely, so ISC students should add NCERT reading to their school work.
The chapter lists are very similar. ISC's syllabus is written in more detail, and its science projects carry more marks (10 in each science, against 3–5 in CBSE's practical scheme). The pass mark is 35% in ISC and 33% in CBSE.
We cannot say that, and nobody should promise it. The JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin allows either 75% aggregate in five subjects or a place in the top 20 percentile of your own board. Because the percentile route compares students within the same board, neither board has a built-in advantage.
They take steady time: a practical exam, a project and a practical file in each science, and two projects with a viva in Maths. Planning them early in Class 12 prevents a clash with mock tests in December and January. Our ISC board exam 2027 preparation plan shows where they fit.
No. Linear Programming is in both the ISC 2027 and CBSE 2026–27 Class 12 Maths syllabi (5 marks each), but not in the JEE (Main) 2026 syllabus. Prepare it for the board exam only.
Yes. For ISC, the regulations require a pass certificate with pass marks in English and four other subjects, admission regularised by 31 August, and no subject changes after 15 September of the Class 11 year.
Yes. That is how most of our Class 11–12 students work: board chapters first, then the extra depth, speed and missing topics the entrance exam needs. Results depend on the student's effort and starting point, so we do not promise marks or ranks. Our Class 12 home tutors in Gurgaon teach at home or online, and male and female tutors are available.
