IB Home Tutors in Gurgaon

IB Home Tutors in Gurgaon – PYP, MYP & DP Tutors at Home

Ajay Vatsyayan Classes provides IB home tutors in Gurgaon for every stage of the International Baccalaureate: PYP, MYP and the Diploma Programme (DP). A subject specialist comes to your home or teaches online one-to-one, works from your child's actual IB course and school calendar, and helps with concepts, internal assessments, the Extended Essay and exam technique. Families start with a free demo class, and male and female tutors are available.

We have taught in Gurgaon for 12+ years, with 25,000+ students, 500+ verified tutors and families from 50+ Gurgaon schools. This guide explains how the IB works at each stage and where a tutor genuinely helps, so you can decide what your child needs before you speak to anyone.

How the IB works: PYP, MYP and DP at a glance

The International Baccalaureate is not one course but a continuum of programmes, each with its own way of teaching and assessing. Knowing which stage your child is in tells you what kind of help makes sense, because a PYP child, an MYP student and a DP candidate need very different things from a tutor.

ProgrammeAges (approx.)How it is assessedWhere a tutor helps most
Primary Years Programme (PYP)3–12School-based assessment; inquiry-led units; the PYP exhibition in the final yearReading, writing and number fluency; confidence with open-ended inquiry tasks
Middle Years Programme (MYP)11–16Criteria A–D in each subject, each marked on levels 1–8; optional eAssessment in the final year; the personal projectUnderstanding the criteria, maths and science foundations, structured writing, the personal project process
Diploma Programme (DP)16–19Six subjects graded 1–7, plus the core (TOK, Extended Essay, CAS); internal assessments and final examsSubject depth at HL, internal assessments, Extended Essay guidance, past-paper and exam technique

The IB also offers a Career-related Programme (CP) for ages 16–19, which combines some DP courses with career-related study. Our tutors support the DP subjects within it in the same way.

Parents moving from CBSE or ICSE are often surprised that the IB has no single prescribed textbook. Schools design their own units within the IB subject guides, so a good IB tutor starts from your child's unit plans, task sheets and assessment calendar.

The IB Diploma Programme explained

The Diploma Programme is a two-year course for Classes 11 and 12, with final exams normally in May of the second year. Students take six subjects plus a compulsory core, and the diploma is scored out of 45 points.

The six subject groups

DP students choose one subject from each of these groups, although they can usually replace the arts subject with a second choice from another group:

  • Group 1: Studies in language and literature (for example English A)
  • Group 2: Language acquisition (for example Hindi B, French B or Spanish ab initio)
  • Group 3: Individuals and societies (for example Economics, Business Management, Psychology, History)
  • Group 4: Sciences (for example Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science)
  • Group 5: Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation)
  • Group 6: The arts (for example Visual Arts, Music, Theatre), or a second subject from Groups 1–4

Which subjects a school actually offers varies, so always check your school's own option blocks.

Standard Level vs Higher Level

Each subject is taken at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). Students normally take three subjects at HL and three at SL, and some take four at HL. The choice matters more than most families realise, because university offers often name specific HL subjects.

Standard Level (SL)Higher Level (HL)
Recommended teaching timeAbout 150 hours over two yearsAbout 240 hours over two years
ContentCore syllabusCore syllabus plus additional HL material, often more abstract or more mathematical
ExamsFewer or shorter papers in many subjectsMore papers or longer papers, with harder, less familiar questions
Grading1–71–7 (the same scale, against a harder course)
Typical reason to chooseBreadth; subjects not central to university plansSubjects needed or preferred for the intended degree

The core: TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) asks how we know what we claim to know. It is assessed through an exhibition and an essay on a title set by the IB.
  • The Extended Essay (EE) is an independent research paper of up to 4,000 words in a subject the student chooses, written with a school supervisor.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is a record of experiences and projects across the two years. It is not graded, but it must be completed for the diploma to be awarded.

How DP scoring works

Each of the six subjects is graded from 1 to 7. TOK and the EE are each graded A to E, and together they earn up to 3 extra points. That gives the maximum of 45 (6 × 7 + 3). The diploma is awarded with a minimum of 24 points, as long as the student also meets the IB's other passing conditions, such as completing CAS.

Internal assessments

Almost every DP subject has an internal assessment (IA): coursework marked by the school teacher and then moderated by the IB. In Maths it is a written exploration; in the sciences it is a scientific investigation; in Economics it is a portfolio of commentaries. IAs usually count for 20–30% of the subject grade, which is why so many Gurgaon families look for help in Year 1, when IA topics are chosen.

The IB publishes the official description of the programme on its Diploma Programme page, which is worth reading alongside your school's own handbook.

IB DP Maths: Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation

IB DP Maths comes in two courses, Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI), each available at SL and HL. AA leans towards algebra, calculus and proof; AI leans towards modelling, statistics and technology. The right choice depends mainly on what your child wants to study after school.

Analysis & Approaches (AA)Applications & Interpretation (AI)
EmphasisAlgebraic manipulation, functions, calculus, proof and abstract reasoningModelling real situations, statistics and data, using technology to solve problems
Style of questionsMany questions must be solved by hand; one paper at each level is non-calculatorGraphic display calculator (GDC) used heavily; more context-based questions
SL assessmentTwo papers (80%) plus the exploration (20%)Two papers (80%) plus the exploration (20%)
HL assessmentThree papers (80%) plus the exploration (20%)Three papers (80%) plus the exploration (20%)
Often suitsEngineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, and economics at maths-heavy universitiesSocial sciences, business, biology and medicine-related courses, psychology, design

How to choose AA or AI

Start from the destination, not from which course looks easier. A practical sequence:

  1. List four or five target universities and courses, in India and abroad, and read their published IB requirements. Engineering, computer science, physics and maths courses often ask for Maths AA HL specifically.
  2. Check whether the student plans to sit JEE. JEE maths is closer in spirit to AA, and even AA HL does not cover everything JEE tests (see the JEE section below).
  3. Look honestly at algebra fluency. A student who struggles with algebraic manipulation will find AA HL demanding from the first term. That is fixable with tutoring, but it needs to start early.
  4. Talk to the school's DP coordinator before the option deadline, because timetable blocks sometimes limit combinations.

The Maths IA (the exploration)

The exploration is a written report on a mathematical topic the student chooses. It is worth 20% of the final grade in both AA and AI, at both levels. The IB marks it on criteria that reward clear communication, mathematical presentation, personal engagement, reflection and the correct use of mathematics at the level of the course.

Common problems are topics that are too broad, maths below the course level, and reports that describe a method without real engagement. A tutor helps the student test a topic early, understand the criteria, learn the maths the topic needs and critique their own draft. The student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes every word.

Ajay Vatsyayan, our founder, teaches IB DP Maths himself, alongside Class 11–12 Maths and Physics for CBSE, ICSE and ISC, and JEE and NEET preparation. You can read about his background on his tutor profile. For IB DP maths tutors in Gurgaon at other levels, including MYP maths, see our wider guide to maths home tutors in Gurgaon.

IB DP Physics, Chemistry and Biology

The IB introduced new DP Physics, Chemistry and Biology courses with first assessment in 2025, so students in Gurgaon schools today are on the new syllabus. Past papers from before 2025 are still useful for practice, but only after a tutor has checked which questions still match the current content.

What changed in the current science courses

  • Physics is organised around five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics.
  • Chemistry is organised around two broad strands, structure and reactivity, with links drawn between them.
  • Biology is organised around four themes: unity and diversity; form and function; interaction and interdependence; and continuity and change.
  • All three courses include a compulsory collaborative sciences project, an interdisciplinary task on a real-world problem.
  • The internal assessment in each is the scientific investigation, an independent research report worth 20% of the grade.

Where students struggle, and what a tutor does

For an IB physics tutor in Gurgaon, the usual work at HL is the mathematical side: vectors, fields, circular and simple harmonic motion, and the quantitative parts of quantum and nuclear physics. In Chemistry, students often lose marks on explanations that are almost right, for example in bonding, energetics and equilibrium, where the wording matters. In Biology, the challenge is the volume of content and data-based questions that ask students to interpret unfamiliar graphs.

Across all three, the scientific investigation needs a focused research question, a sensible method and an honest analysis of uncertainty. Tutors help students narrow a question, understand the assessment criteria, process data correctly and write a clear evaluation. They do not design the experiment for the student or write the report.

Science tutors from the Ajay Vatsyayan Classes Home Tutors Team teach Physics and Chemistry for IB, board syllabuses and entrance exams. More on each subject: physics tuition in Gurgaon and chemistry tuition in Gurgaon.

IB MYP tutoring: criteria, eAssessment and the personal project

The MYP runs for students aged roughly 11 to 16, usually Classes 6 to 10 in Gurgaon. It is assessed against published criteria rather than by percentage marks. An IB MYP tutor in Gurgaon helps most by teaching students what each criterion is asking for, and by building solid maths and science foundations before the DP.

Criteria-based assessment

Each MYP subject has four assessment criteria, labelled A to D. In Maths, for example, they cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Each criterion is marked on levels from 1 to 8, divided into bands with written descriptors. The criterion levels are then combined into an overall subject grade from 1 to 7.

So a student can know the content and still score low on "communicating" because they did not show their reasoning the way the descriptor asks. A tutor who knows the criteria can show exactly why a task scored a 5 and what a 7 needed.

MYP eAssessment

Schools can register students for the IB's optional external eAssessment in the final MYP year. It combines on-screen examinations in some subjects with ePortfolios of coursework in others. On-screen exams feel different from paper tests. Students need to be comfortable with the question formats and with planning extended responses on screen, and a tutor can build that familiarity with timed practice.

The personal project

In the final year, every MYP student completes a personal project: an independent project on a topic of their choice, with a product or outcome and a report. It is assessed on three equally weighted criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, and the IB moderates it externally. Help from a tutor here is about process: setting a realistic goal, keeping a process journal, managing time and reflecting honestly. The project and report must be the student's own.

PYP support for younger children

Most PYP children do not need subject tuition in the DP sense. What helps is a patient tutor who strengthens reading, writing and number sense, and helps a child get comfortable with the inquiry-based way PYP classrooms work.

PYP units are built around transdisciplinary themes, and children research and present rather than memorise. A weekly session can build core literacy and numeracy, practise explaining thinking aloud, and support the PYP exhibition without doing it for the child. Some families of younger children prefer a female tutor for these sessions; see our page on female home and online tutors in Gurgaon.

How an IB home tutor helps, with a sample weekly plan

An IB tutor is useful when they work from the student's own school tasks and deadlines, not from a separate course. Our process is the same at every stage: understand the gap, plan around the school calendar, and review progress with the family.

How we start

  1. Free demo class. The tutor meets the student, looks at recent tests, IA drafts or MYP task feedback, and identifies the real gaps.
  2. Tutor match. We match by subject, level (SL or HL, MYP year), location in Gurgaon, timing and preference for a male or female tutor.
  3. Term plan. The tutor maps school deadlines (IA drafts, EE milestones, mock exams) and agrees a weekly plan with the family.
  4. Regular reviews. Parents get honest feedback on what has improved and what still needs work.

A realistic weekly plan for a DP Year 1 student

Take a typical Year 1 student taking Maths AA HL and Physics HL who wants support in both. This is a sample, not a fixed package; we adjust it to the student's timetable and energy.

  • Monday (90 minutes): Maths AA HL. Reteach the week's hardest school topic, then work through 6–8 exam-style questions.
  • Wednesday (90 minutes): Physics HL. Concept work on the current theme, then data-based and extended-response practice.
  • Friday or Saturday (60–90 minutes): alternating. One week, an IA check-in (topic, criteria, next steps); the next, a mixed timed set from both subjects.
  • Between sessions (30–45 minutes, student alone): a short assigned problem set, marked at the start of the next session.

In Year 2, the balance shifts. From about January, sessions move to full past papers under timed conditions, markscheme review and targeted revision of weak topics before the May exams.

IA and Extended Essay guidance, within the rules

Academic integrity is non-negotiable in the IB, and it is non-negotiable with us. Our tutors guide; they never write, rewrite or "polish" an IA, EE or TOK essay. In practice, that means:

  • Helping a student test whether a research question is focused and workable.
  • Explaining the assessment criteria and what markers look for.
  • Teaching the subject content or technique the investigation needs, such as a statistical test or an uncertainty calculation.
  • Asking questions about a draft so the student can see its weaknesses and fix them in their own words.
  • Reminding the student that their school supervisor must know about any outside support, as IB rules expect.

Work that is not the student's own can cost them the subject grade or the diploma. A good tutor protects them from that risk.

Exam-technique sessions

Many IB students know their content but lose marks in the exam. Exam-technique sessions cover command terms ("explain", "determine", "show that"), setting out working so method marks are earned, timing across papers and efficient calculator use. Reviewing markschemes with a tutor shows exactly how marks are awarded.

IB alongside JEE, SAT and university applications

IB students can prepare for Indian engineering entrances, but the IB alone is not enough for JEE. JEE Main and Advanced follow a syllabus close to Indian Class 11–12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths, and they test speed and problem-solving depth that the IB does not train for.

IB and JEE: what to expect

  • Overlap exists but is partial. Maths AA HL and Physics HL cover a good share of JEE ideas, but some JEE topics are covered lightly or not at all in the DP, and the problem style is very different.
  • Chemistry is usually the biggest gap, particularly the breadth of organic and inorganic chemistry JEE expects.
  • Time is the real constraint. A DP student already has IAs, the EE, TOK and CAS. JEE preparation needs to start in Class 11 with a plan that protects IB deadlines.
  • Check eligibility early. Read the current JEE information bulletin for how IB results are treated, rather than relying on second-hand advice.

Our tutors, including Ajay Vatsyayan for Maths and Physics, teach both IB and JEE, so they can plan one timetable instead of two competing ones. See our JEE Main and Advanced coaching in Gurgaon for how that preparation is structured.

SAT and applications abroad

SAT maths sits well within IB DP Maths, so SAT preparation is mostly about format, pacing and the reading and writing section. For applications abroad, predicted grades, HL choices and the EE all matter; a tutor's job is to help the student earn those grades, not to manage the application.

IB tuition across Gurgaon: schools and areas

Our IB home tutors travel across Gurgaon to students from many different IB schools. Students can also switch to online one-to-one sessions during exams, travel or heavy school weeks.

IB World Schools in and around Gurugram

These are some of the schools in and around Gurugram that offer IB programmes, according to their own official websites. Ajay Vatsyayan Classes is an independent tuition service and is not affiliated with any of them.

  • Pathways World School, Aravali (off Gurgaon–Sohna Road): describes itself as an IB continuum school offering the PYP, MYP and DP.
  • Lancers International School (DLF Phase 5): states that it offers the PYP, MYP and DP, and the Career-related Programme.
  • DPS International, Gurgaon (Sector 50): states that it is an authorised IB World School for the Diploma Programme.
  • The Shri Ram School, Moulsari campus: offers the IB Diploma Programme for students aged 16 to 19.

The IB's own Find an IB World School directory is the authoritative place to confirm which programmes a school is currently authorised to offer. Because every IB World School works from the same IB subject guides and assessment criteria, our tutors can support students from any of them. They also adapt to each school's own unit order and internal deadlines.

Areas our IB tutors cover

Home tuition or online?

Home tuition suits younger students, students who focus better face to face, and HL subjects where working through long problems on paper together helps. Online one-to-one suits busy DP students with long school days, families in more distant sectors, and short, targeted sessions such as an IA check-in. Many of our IB families use a mix of both. For costs, which depend on level, subject and mode, read our guide to home tuition charges in Gurgaon.

Who teaches: our IB tutors

We match every student with a named, verified tutor, and parents meet that tutor in the demo class before committing. Some of the teachers who lead our Maths and Science work:

  • Ajay Vatsyayan (founder): Maths and Physics educator for IB DP Maths, CBSE/ICSE/ISC Class 11–12, JEE and NEET, with 12+ years of teaching in Gurgaon.
  • Subject specialists from the Ajay Vatsyayan Classes Home Tutors Team, matched to your child’s board, level and goals. You meet the tutor in a free demo class before you decide.

For Biology, Economics, English and languages, we match from our wider pool of 500+ verified tutors and share the tutor's background before the demo.

Choosing an IB tutor: a parent's checklist

The right IB tutor understands how IB assessment works in their subject and can explain it clearly to your child. Use these questions in any demo class, with us or anyone else.

  • Do they know the current course? Ask which syllabus they teach from. For the sciences, they should know the course with first assessment in 2025.
  • Can they explain the assessment? A DP tutor should explain papers, IA criteria and the 1–7 scale; an MYP tutor should explain criteria A–D and the 1–8 levels.
  • Do they ask for school material? A good tutor wants to see unit plans, task sheets, feedback and deadlines.
  • Are they clear on academic integrity? They should say plainly that they will guide IA and EE work but never write it.
  • Do they teach your level? HL Maths AA and SL Maths AI need different things. Ask directly.
  • Do they use past papers and markschemes properly? Ask how they choose questions that still match the current syllabus.
  • Is there a plan? Expect a weekly structure linked to school deadlines, not "we'll see each week".
  • Does your child connect with them? After the demo, ask your child whether the explanations made sense. It matters more than anything else on this list.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child start IB tuition?

For DP students, the best time is early in Year 1, before gaps build up in HL subjects and before IA topics are chosen. For MYP students, starting in MYP 4 or 5 builds foundations for the DP. Starting a few months before exams can still help, but there is less time to fix underlying gaps.

Do you offer IB tutors in Gurugram for both home and online classes?

Yes. Our IB tutors visit homes across Gurugram and also teach online one-to-one. Many families use home sessions for regular teaching and online sessions for short IA check-ins or during exam weeks.

Can your tutor write or edit my child's IA or Extended Essay?

No. Tutors guide, and they never write, rewrite or edit IA, EE or TOK work. They help with research questions, criteria, subject content and self-review. Submitting work that is not the student's own breaches IB academic integrity rules and can cost the student their diploma.

Should my child take Maths AA or AI?

Decide from university plans. Engineering, physics, computer science and maths courses often ask for Maths AA HL, while many social science, business and life science courses accept AI. Check the requirements of your target universities and talk to the school's DP coordinator before the option deadline.

Can an IB student prepare for JEE at the same time?

Yes, but it needs a plan from Class 11. The IB does not cover all of the JEE syllabus or its style of problems, so extra JEE preparation is essential, especially in Chemistry. Our tutors who teach both IB and JEE can build one timetable that protects IB deadlines.

Is tutoring useful in the MYP, or only in the DP?

It can be very useful in the MYP, especially in Maths and Sciences, where DP HL courses assume strong foundations. MYP tutoring also helps students understand the A–D criteria, prepare for eAssessment and manage the personal project process.

Do you have female IB tutors?

Yes. Both male and female tutors are available, and you can state your preference when you book. We match on subject and level first, then on your preference and location.

How much does IB home tuition cost in Gurgaon?

Fees depend on the programme, level (SL or HL), subject, mode and number of sessions a week. Our fees guide, linked in the Gurgaon section above, explains what is fair, and we confirm your fee before you start.

How does the free demo class work?

You call or fill in the contact form. We match a tutor, and the tutor meets your child at home or online. The demo covers a real topic from your child's current school work and ends with the tutor's honest view of what is needed. There is no obligation to continue.
