Maths Home Tutors in Gurgaon

Maths Home Tutor in Gurgaon – Class 1–12, IB, IGCSE & JEE Maths

A maths home tutor in Gurgaon from Ajay Vatsyayan Classes teaches your child one-to-one, at home or online, working from their own school syllabus: CBSE, ICSE/ISC, Cambridge IGCSE or IB, from Class 1 to Class 12, and JEE Main and Advanced. We start by finding the exact gaps in your child's maths. Then we match a verified tutor, give you a free demo class, agree a weekly plan and review progress with you at regular checkpoints.

We have taught maths in Gurgaon for 12+ years, with 25,000+ students, 500+ verified tutors and families from 50+ Gurgaon schools. This guide explains how our maths tuition works at each stage and for each board, so you can decide what your child actually needs.

How our maths home tuition in Gurgaon works

You tell us your child's class, board, school and the problem you are seeing. We match a maths tutor who knows that syllabus, and the first class is a free demo, so you can judge the tutor before you commit.

  1. Enquiry. Call +91 92204 75088 or fill in the contact form. We ask about class, board, school, recent marks, the chapters that feel hard, preferred timings and whether you would like a male or female tutor.
  2. Matching. We pick a tutor from our verified pool who has taught that board and level before. A Class 4 child who needs patience and a Class 12 ISC student who needs calculus speed need very different teachers.
  3. Free demo class. The tutor teaches a real topic from your child's current chapter and runs a short diagnostic. You and your child decide whether the fit is right. If it isn't, we suggest another tutor.
  4. Plan. After the demo, the tutor shares a written plan: number of sessions a week, which chapters come first, how school tests and board dates fit in, and what homework looks like.
  5. Progress reviews. The tutor keeps an error log and tracks school test marks. We check in with parents at regular intervals, usually after each unit test or every four to six weeks, to adjust pace or focus.

For fees, which depend on class, board, mode and tutor experience, see our guide to home tuition charges in Gurgaon and what is fair.

Maths tuition by class: what your child needs at each stage

Maths is cumulative. A gap in Class 6 fractions shows up as a problem with Class 9 algebra, and weak Class 10 trigonometry makes Class 11 harder. So our tutors teach the current chapter and repair the older topics it depends on.

Class 1–5: number sense and mental maths

At primary level the goal is confidence with numbers, not speed with procedures. A good tutor makes sure a child understands place value, can split and combine numbers in their head, and knows why the column method for addition and subtraction works.

  • Place value, number bonds and skip counting
  • Times tables built from patterns, not rote chanting alone
  • Mental maths strategies: doubling, near tens, compensation
  • Fractions using real objects and pictures before symbols
  • Measurement, time, money and simple data handling
  • Word problems: reading the question and choosing the operation

Two or three short sessions a week usually work better than one long one at this age. A child who "knows the tables but can't do word problems" usually has a reading and reasoning gap, which the right practice fixes.

Class 6–8: algebra and geometry foundations

These middle years matter more than many families realise. Students meet negative numbers, variables, equations, ratio and proportion, and formal geometry for the first time.

  • Integers, fractions, decimals and the order of operations
  • Algebraic expressions, identities and simple linear equations
  • Ratio, proportion, percentage and their everyday uses
  • Lines, angles, triangles, congruence and constructions
  • Perimeter, area, surface area and volume
  • Exponents, squares and square roots, and data handling

At this stage we ask students to say each step out loud. If a child can explain why the equation balances, they will not need to relearn it in Class 9.

Class 9–10: the board syllabus

Class 9 and 10 maths is where board preparation begins. For CBSE students, the NCERT Class 10 book covers real numbers, polynomials, pairs of linear equations, quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, triangles, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and its applications, circles, areas related to circles, surface areas and volumes, statistics and probability. ICSE Class 9–10 maths covers similar ground with its own chapter order and extra topics, such as matrices, GST and banking, in the ICSE syllabus.

CBSE Standard vs Basic mathematics. For the Class 10 board exam, CBSE offers two levels: Mathematics Standard (code 041) and Mathematics Basic (code 241). According to CBSE's curriculum document, both follow the same syllabus but the question papers differ in difficulty. Students planning to take Mathematics in Class 11, especially for engineering or JEE, should normally choose Standard. Check the current CBSE rules and your school's policy before deciding, as the Class 11 eligibility rules have changed over the years. You can read the official CBSE Class 10 Mathematics (041 and 241) curriculum on the CBSE Academic website.

A class 10 maths tutor in Gurgaon should cover the NCERT exercises and examples completely, then move to CBSE sample papers and previous board papers, with a clear focus on presenting steps. More on this year on our Class 10 tuition in Gurgaon page.

Class 11–12: calculus, vectors and 3D, probability

Senior secondary maths is a big step up. Class 11 introduces sets, relations and functions, trigonometric functions, complex numbers, permutations and combinations, the binomial theorem, sequences and series, straight lines, conic sections, an introduction to 3D geometry, limits and derivatives, statistics and probability. Class 12 builds on this with relations and functions, inverse trigonometry, matrices and determinants, continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, integrals and their applications, differential equations, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability.

ISC Class 11–12 mathematics covers much of the same core, with its own paper structure: a compulsory section plus a choice of optional sections. Our tutors teach from the textbook your school uses and the current CISCE specification.

At this level we separate two goals: scoring well in the board paper, and building the problem-solving depth needed for JEE or university maths. Many students need both, and the plan should say which comes first in which month.

StageCore maths focusCommon sticking pointsWhat a tutor does first
Class 1–5Place value, operations, tables, fractions, measurementFinger counting, word problems, fear of "hard" sumsMental maths games, visual fractions, short daily practice
Class 6–8Integers, algebra, ratio, percentages, geometry, mensurationSign errors, forming equations, geometry reasoningDiagnostic test on arithmetic and fractions, then algebra rules with worked examples
Class 9–10Polynomials, linear and quadratic equations, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, circles, statistics, probabilityProofs and theorems, trigonometry identities, long word problemsNCERT/ICSE textbook completion, then previous papers with step marking
Class 11–12Functions, calculus, vectors, 3D geometry, matrices, probabilityLimits and integration technique, 3D visualisation, conditional probabilityFix Class 10 algebra and trigonometry gaps, then calculus in a planned sequence

Maths tutors by board: CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IGCSE and IB

The same topic can be taught and examined very differently across boards. A tutor who knows only CBSE may struggle to prepare an IB student for an investigation-style question, and the reverse is also true. We match tutors by board as well as by class.

CBSE (NCERT)

CBSE maths follows the NCERT textbooks closely, and board papers reward complete, well-set-out working. Our CBSE maths tutors finish every NCERT exercise and example, then add NCERT Exemplar and CBSE sample papers. For students also aiming at JEE, tutors show where each chapter leads.

ICSE and ISC

ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12) maths, set by CISCE, has a wide syllabus and long papers, so speed and neat presentation matter. Commercial maths topics in ICSE and the optional sections in ISC need careful planning so that no section is left under-prepared.

Cambridge IGCSE: Mathematics 0580 and Additional Mathematics 0606

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is offered at Core and Extended tiers. From the June 2025 exam series, Papers 1 (Core) and 2 (Extended) are non-calculator papers, so mental arithmetic and exact working count for more than before. Some schools also enter strong students for Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606), which introduces functions, calculus and further algebra ahead of A Level or IB DP. See the Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 syllabus page for the official details, and our dedicated page for IGCSE home tutors in Gurgaon.

IB: MYP and DP Maths (AA and AI, SL and HL)

In the IB Middle Years Programme, maths is assessed against criteria that include investigating patterns and communicating reasoning, not only getting the right answer. In the Diploma Programme there are two courses: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA), which is more algebraic and suits students heading towards engineering, physics or maths degrees; and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI), which is more statistical and technology-based. Each is available at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). DP students also write a maths Internal Assessment (the exploration), which needs guidance on choosing a topic and structuring the maths. Ajay Vatsyayan teaches IB DP Maths himself. More detail is on our IB home tutors in Gurgaon page.

JEE maths tutor in Gurgaon: Main vs Advanced

JEE maths rewards fast, accurate problem solving across the whole Class 11–12 syllabus. A one-to-one JEE maths tutor in Gurgaon helps most when a student understands school maths but can't yet convert it into speed and multi-step problem solving.

How JEE Main and JEE Advanced maths differ

  • JEE Main is conducted by the NTA. In the current pattern, the Mathematics section of Paper 1 has 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 numerical-value questions, with negative marking. Breadth, accuracy and speed matter most: most questions test one or two concepts applied cleanly.
  • JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs each year, and the paper format can change from year to year. Questions often combine several chapters, for example calculus with coordinate geometry or probability with combinatorics, and may include question types with more than one correct option.

Which chapters matter most

Every chapter can appear, but some carry more of the load and link to many others:

  • Calculus: functions, limits, continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, definite and indefinite integration, area under curves, differential equations
  • Algebra: quadratic equations, complex numbers, sequences and series, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, matrices and determinants
  • Coordinate geometry: straight lines, circles and conic sections
  • Vectors and 3D geometry
  • Probability and trigonometry, which feed into almost every other area

For the full programme, including physics and chemistry, see our JEE Main and Advanced coaching in Gurgaon page.

Building JEE maths from Class 9

Starting early doesn't mean doing Class 11 calculus in Class 9. It means making the foundations exceptionally strong: algebraic manipulation, factorisation, quadratic equations, coordinate geometry and trigonometry, plus a habit of attempting unfamiliar problems without giving up. Our article on when Class 9 students should start JEE mathematics preparation sets out a sensible sequence.

JEE students often ask whether online classes can match in-person teaching. Our comparison of online vs offline JEE maths classes goes through the trade-offs honestly.

Maths anxiety and weak foundations: how we diagnose and fix them

Most children who "hate maths" are not bad at it. Usually a few gaps have made later topics confusing, the confusion has turned into anxiety, and the anxiety leads to avoidance. Finding and fixing those specific gaps works better than simply doing more questions.

1. Diagnostic test

In the first sessions, the tutor gives a short test that goes back two or three years below the current class. For a Class 9 student, that means fractions, negative numbers, basic algebra and simple equations as well as the current chapter. The aim is to find where understanding actually breaks down, not to produce a score.

2. Gap map

The results become a simple gap map: a list of topics marked "secure", "shaky" or "missing". The tutor shares it with you. The plan then combines current school chapters with short repair sessions on the missing foundations, so your child keeps up at school while the gaps close.

3. Spaced practice

Cramming a topic once and moving on is why students forget it by the exam. Our tutors bring back each topic after a few days, again after a couple of weeks, and again before tests. A few mixed questions from older chapters go into every week's homework.

4. Error log

Every mistake goes into a notebook with three columns: the question, what went wrong, and the correct method. Patterns soon appear (sign errors, misreading, a weak formula, timing), and each needs a different fix. Before tests, the error log is the most useful thing to revise.

Handling anxiety directly

  • Start each session with a question the child can solve, to build momentum.
  • Praise the method and effort, not only correct answers.
  • Teach a "stuck routine": reread, write what is given, try a small case, draw a diagram.

If maths has become a source of stress at home, start with one calm, one-to-one session. The demo is free and there's no obligation.

A realistic weekly plan and practice routine

Consistency beats intensity in maths. A realistic plan fits around school, homework, sport and rest, and it still works in a busy exam month.

A sample week for a Class 10 student (three tutor sessions)

  • Monday (tutor): new concept from the current school chapter, worked examples, first textbook exercises.
  • Tuesday (self, 30–40 minutes): finish the textbook exercise; mark any doubts.
  • Wednesday (tutor): doubts from Tuesday, harder questions, one short repair topic from the gap map.
  • Thursday (self, 30–40 minutes): mixed revision questions from older chapters (spaced practice).
  • Friday (tutor): short timed test on the week's work, then go through errors and update the error log.
  • Weekend (self, 45–60 minutes): one section of a sample or previous paper, and rest.

Adjust the number of sessions to the class and goal. Primary children often do well with two or three shorter sessions a week. Class 11–12 students preparing for JEE usually need more contact time and much more independent practice. How much depends on the student. The tutor sets the exact load after the diagnostic and reviews it after every progress check.

Homework and practice routines by class

Class 6–820–40 minutes: textbook exercise plus a few revision questionsOne mixed-topic worksheet; update the error logCheck the homework was done, not whether it is correct
Class 9–1040–60 minutes on most daysOne timed test; one sample-paper section; error-log revisionProtect study time; watch for signs of stress

Exam technique that earns marks

Many students lose marks through presentation, timing and small slips rather than lack of knowledge. These habits are worth practising from Class 8 onwards.

Show every step

Board papers such as CBSE, ICSE and ISC award marks for method, not only the final answer. Write the formula, substitute the values, then simplify. A student who makes an arithmetic slip in the last line can still earn most of the marks if the working is clear. In JEE, only the final answer counts, so accuracy checks matter even more there.

Manage time

  • Read the whole paper in the first few minutes and mark the questions you are sure of.
  • If a question isn't working after a reasonable attempt, move on and come back.
  • Keep the last 10–15 minutes to check calculations and unanswered parts.
  • In JEE, where there is negative marking, decide your guessing policy in mock tests, not on the day.

Know the calculator rules

  • CBSE and ICSE/ISC board exams: calculators are not allowed, so arithmetic fluency and neat manual calculation matter.
  • Cambridge IGCSE 0580: from 2025, Papers 1 and 2 are non-calculator and Papers 3 and 4 allow a calculator. Students need to practise both.
  • IB DP Maths: AA Paper 1 is non-calculator. The other papers require a graphic display calculator (GDC), and knowing its functions well saves a lot of time.
  • JEE Main: computer-based, with no physical calculator permitted. Check the current NTA bulletin for any on-screen tools.

Online vs home maths tuition: when each works best

Both modes are one-to-one and follow the same plan. The right choice depends on your child's age, attention span and schedule, and on where you live in Gurgaon.

Home tuition works best when

  • The child is in primary or middle school and benefits from a tutor sitting beside them.
  • Attention drifts on screens, or the child needs to be watched writing out working.
  • Maths anxiety is high and in-person reassurance helps.

Online 1-to-1 tuition works best when

  • The student is in Class 9–12 or preparing for JEE and is self-motivated.
  • Travel time is the problem, for example a late school bus, a far-off sector or evening traffic.
  • You want a particular specialist tutor who can't travel to your area at your preferred time.

For online maths, a pen tablet or a shared digital whiteboard makes a real difference to writing out working. If you'd prefer a female tutor for home or online classes, see our female home and online tutors in Gurgaon page. We have both male and female maths tutors.

How to choose a maths tutor in Gurgaon: a parent's checklist

Whoever you choose, check these points first.

  1. Board match. Has the tutor taught your child's exact board and class recently: CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IGCSE 0580/0606 or IB AA/AI?
  2. Verified background. Are qualifications and identity checked, and can you see a profile?
  3. Diagnosis first. Does the tutor test for gaps, or go straight to the current chapter?
  4. A written plan. Will you get a plan with sessions per week, chapter order and test dates?
  5. Teaching method. In the demo, does the tutor ask your child to explain their thinking, or mostly talk?
  6. Practice and error tracking. Is there structured homework and an error log?
  7. Progress reviews. How and when will you hear about progress?
  8. Fit with your child. Was your child comfortable asking questions in the demo? Do you have a male or female tutor preference?
  9. Transparent fees. Are fees, cancellation and make-up rules clear in advance?

Watch the demo session if you can; it answers most of these questions.

Parents' questions about maths tuition in Gurgaon

How do I find a good maths home tutor in Gurgaon?

Start with board and class match, then ask for a demo class and watch how the tutor handles your child's mistakes. Look for a tutor who diagnoses gaps, shares a written plan and tracks progress. With us, you tell us your requirements and we match a verified tutor and arrange a free demo.

How much does maths home tuition in Gurgaon cost?

Fees depend on class, board, mode (home or online), the number of sessions a week and the tutor's experience. JEE and IB DP tuition generally costs more than primary maths. Our guide to home tuition charges in Gurgaon explains the usual ranges and what is fair.

How many maths classes a week does my child need?

Most school students do well with two or three sessions a week, plus short daily practice at home. Students with large gaps, or those close to board exams, may need more for a few months. JEE aspirants need more contact time and much more independent practice.

Should my child take CBSE Class 10 Maths Standard or Basic?

If your child may take Mathematics in Class 11, especially for engineering or JEE, Standard (041) is normally the right choice. Basic (241) covers the same syllabus with an easier paper and suits students who won't continue with core maths. Check the current CBSE rules and your school's policy before the choice is finalised.

Do you have tutors for IB and IGCSE maths?

Yes. We match tutors for IB MYP maths, IB DP Maths AA and AI at SL and HL, and Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 and Additional Mathematics 0606. Ajay Vatsyayan teaches IB DP Maths himself. Tutors also guide the IB maths Internal Assessment.

When should my child start preparing for JEE maths?

Class 9 or 10 is a good time to strengthen algebra, trigonometry and coordinate geometry and to build problem-solving habits, without rushing into Class 11 content. Serious JEE-level work usually begins in Class 11. A one-to-one tutor can pace this around school and board exams.

My child is scared of maths. Can tuition help?

Usually, yes. Anxiety often comes from specific gaps that make new topics confusing. We start with a diagnostic, fix the missing foundations step by step and build confidence with problems your child can solve before moving to harder ones.

Is online maths tuition as effective as home tuition?

For motivated students in Class 9–12 and JEE aspirants, online one-to-one tuition with a digital whiteboard works very well. Younger children and students who find it hard to concentrate often do better with a tutor at home. Many families combine the two.

Can I request a female maths tutor?

Yes. We have both male and female maths tutors for home and online classes. Tell us your preference when you enquire and we'll take it into account when matching.

What happens in the free demo class?

The tutor teaches a topic from your child's current chapter and runs a short diagnostic to spot gaps. Afterwards you get feedback and a suggested plan. You decide whether to continue, and if the fit isn't right we suggest another tutor.
