Ajay Vatsyayan Classes provides a one-to-one IB DP Maths AA HL home tutor in Gurgaon for Mathematics: analysis and approaches at higher level, at your home or in live online classes. The tutor covers all five topics and the HL-only content, prepares the student for Papers 1, 2 and 3, and guides the exploration without writing any of it. You meet the tutor in a free demo class before you decide.
We have taught in Gurgaon (Gurugram) for 12+ years, with 25,000+ students, 500+ verified tutors and families from 50+ Gurgaon schools. Course facts below are from the IBO's AA guide (first assessment 2021) and its published 2029 changes, checked on 30 September 2026.
Every session is one tutor with one student, at your home in Gurgaon or live online, following your school's scheme of work.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Diagnostic | Calculator-free algebra, functions and trigonometry. MYP, IGCSE, ICSE and CBSE students have different gaps. |
| 2. Plan | Your school's topic order, test and mock dates, and exploration deadlines. |
| 3. Weekly cycle | Two or three sessions of 60–90 minutes: concept teaching, then IB-style questions for Paper 1 (no calculator), Paper 2 (GDC) and Paper 3 (problem-solving). |
| 4. Review | Timed papers before school tests; every lost mark logged by cause; a short update for parents. |

Book a Free AA HL Demo +91 92204 75088AA HL has five compulsory topics over 240 teaching hours: 210 for the syllabus and 30 for the "toolkit" and exploration. HL students study all the SL content plus additional higher level (AHL) sub-topics.
| Topic | SL / HL hours | HL-only (AHL) content |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Number and algebra | 19 / 39 | Counting principles (permutations and combinations); binomial theorem for fractional and negative indices; partial fractions; complex numbers in Cartesian, polar and Euler form; De Moivre's theorem; proof by induction, by contradiction and by counterexample; systems of up to three linear equations |
| 2. Functions | 21 / 32 | Polynomials, the factor and remainder theorems, and the sum and product of roots; rational functions; odd, even and self-inverse functions; solving g(x) ≥ f(x); graphs of |f(x)|, f(|x|), 1/f(x) and [f(x)]2; modulus equations and inequalities |
| 3. Geometry and trigonometry | 25 / 51 | sec, cosec and cot; arcsin, arccos and arctan; compound-angle identities; vectors: scalar and vector products, lines, skew lines, planes, and intersections and angles between them |
| 4. Statistics and probability | 27 / 33 | Bayes' theorem (up to three events); variance of a discrete random variable; continuous random variables and probability density functions; linear transformations of X |
| 5. Calculus | 28 / 55 | Continuity and differentiability; differentiation from first principles; l'Hôpital's rule; implicit differentiation and related rates; further derivatives (tan x, ax, arcsin x and others); integration by substitution and by parts; volumes of revolution; first-order differential equations (Euler's method, separable, homogeneous, integrating factor); Maclaurin series |
| Toolkit and exploration | 30 / 30 | Same at both levels |
Three written papers make up 80% and the exploration 20%. Every paper can test the whole syllabus.
| Component | Time | Marks | Weight | Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 2 hours | 110 | 30% | No calculator. Section A: short-response questions (about 55 marks). Section B: extended-response questions. |
| Paper 2 | 2 hours | 110 | 30% | GDC required. Same two-section structure as Paper 1. |
| Paper 3 (HL only) | 1 hour | 55 | 20% | GDC required. Two compulsory extended-response problem-solving questions. |
| Exploration | Coursework | 20 | 20% | Marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB |
Paper 3 is the distinctive HL paper. Each question develops a single theme, "leading to a generalization or the interpretation of a context" (IBO guide), rising in difficulty from part to part. In all papers, a correct answer without working may not get full marks.
From our tutors: students often lose Paper 3 marks because they treat each part as a separate question. We teach them to ask, after every part, "what pattern is this building towards?" The answer to part (c) is often the hint for part (e).
The exploration is a report of about 12–20 double-spaced pages on an area of maths the student chooses. It is worth 20%, and without it students "will not receive a grade" (IBO guide). The guide suggests about 10–15 hours of teaching time.
| Criterion (first assessment 2021) | Marks | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|
| A: Presentation | 4 | Coherent, well organised and concise |
| B: Mathematical communication | 4 | Relevant, appropriate and consistent notation, graphs and tables |
| C: Personal engagement | 3 | Clear evidence of the student's own thinking |
| D: Reflection | 3 | Critical reflection on results and methods |
| E: Use of mathematics | 6 | Correct mathematics at course level (the HL descriptor is harder) |
A tutor can help the student choose a workable topic, understand the criteria and learn the mathematics they decide to use. We do not write, rewrite or edit any part of the exploration. It must be the student's own work under the IB's academic integrity rules.
| AA SL | AA HL | |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching hours | 150 | 240 (includes all SL content) |
| Written papers | Paper 1 and Paper 2, 90 minutes each, 80 marks each, 40% each | Papers 1 and 2 (2 hours each, 30% each) plus Paper 3 (1 hour, 20%) |
| Extra content | None | Complex numbers, 3D vectors and planes, proof by induction, further calculus, differential equations, Maclaurin series, Bayes' theorem |
In practice, HL needs algebraic stamina: questions chain techniques, such as partial fractions inside an integral inside a differential equation.
A student can take only one IB maths subject. The IBO subject briefs say AA puts "a strong emphasis on the ability to construct, communicate and justify correct mathematical arguments". Applications and interpretation (AI) "emphasizes the meaning of mathematics in context", and "all external assessments involve the use of technology". The 2017 IBO review FAQ describes AA as intended for students who wish to study mathematics, or subjects with a large mathematical content, at university.
| Analysis and approaches (AA) | Applications and interpretation (AI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Style | Algebra, proof, functions and calculus | Modelling, statistics and technology |
| Calculator | Paper 1 without a calculator | Technology in every paper |
Check the entry requirements of each target university and course, as they differ. Students also weighing Indian entrance exams can read JEE Maths for IB and IGCSE students.
The IBO has published a revised AA course: first teaching August 2027, first assessment May 2029. Students examined in May 2028, including those who started DP1 in August 2026, follow the current (2021) guide. Students starting DP1 in August 2027 take the new course. The IBO calls the change "refinement rather than reinvention" and says no content has been added.
| First assessment 2021 (current) | First assessment 2029 (new) | |
|---|---|---|
| Content removed at HL | – | Financial applications, bivariate data, proof by counterexample, Euler's method |
| HL Paper 1 and Paper 2 | 110 marks each | 100 marks each (still 2 hours, 30% each) |
| HL Paper 3 | 55 marks | 50 marks, 1 hour, 20% |
| SL Papers 1 and 2 | 80 marks each | 75 marks each |
| Exploration criteria | Presentation 4, Mathematical communication 4, Personal engagement 3, Reflection 3, Use of mathematics 6 | Problem specification 4, Abstraction 6, Computation 4, Interpretation 6 (the same for SL and HL) |
Complex numbers, vectors, differential equations and Maclaurin series stay HL only; Paper 1 stays calculator-free. Sources: the IBO's AA updates page and DP mathematics page.

Modulus: |z| = √(1 + 3) = 2. Argument: arctan(√3) = π/3, since z is in the first quadrant. So z = 2 cis(π/3).
De Moivre: z6 = 26 cis(6 × π/3) = 64 cis(2π) = 64.
Answer: 64. Common error: expanding with the binomial theorem, which works but costs time and invites slips.
Let u = x and dv = sin x dx, so du = dx and v = −cos x.
∫ x sin x dx = −x cos x + ∫ cos x dx = −x cos x + sin x + C.
Evaluating from 0 to π/2 gives (0 + 1) − (0 + 0) = 1.
Answer: 1.
Integrating factor: e∫(1/x)dx = x. Multiplying through gives d/dx(xy) = x2, so xy = x3/3 + C.
Using y(1) = 1: 1 = 1/3 + C, so C = 2/3.
Answer: y = (x3 + 2)/(3x); for example, y(2) = 5/3.
P(positive) = 0.01 × 0.95 + 0.99 × 0.10 = 0.0095 + 0.099 = 0.1085.
P(condition | positive) = 0.0095 ÷ 0.1085 = 19/217 ≈ 0.0876.
Answer: about 8.8%. A tree diagram shows why it is so low.
Schools order topics differently, so we plan around your child's school calendar. A typical plan:
| Phase | Usual months | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| DP1, term 1 | August–December | Prior-learning gaps; sequences, logarithms, functions, trigonometry; weekly calculator-free drills |
| DP1, term 2 | January–May | Calculus, probability and distributions; first AHL units (complex numbers, induction, vectors); exploration topic ideas |
| Between DP1 and DP2 | June–July | Consolidation, weak-topic repair and the exploration draft, to the school's internal deadlines |
| DP2, term 1 | August–December | AHL calculus, differential equations, Maclaurin series, planes, continuous random variables and Bayes; exploration submitted; Paper 3 practice |
| DP2, term 2 | January–April | Mocks, then timed papers by type; weak sub-topics revisited before May |
From our tutors: AA HL students who struggle in DP2 have usually let their Paper 1 algebra weaken in DP1 by leaning on the GDC. We set a short calculator-free set every week for both years, because Paper 1 is 30% of the grade.
Tutors visit homes across DLF Phase 1, DLF Phase 3, Sectors 44–49 (Sohna Road), Sectors 51–59 (Golf Course Road), Sectors 60–69 (Golf Course Extension Road) and Sectors 70–79. Online classes are available anywhere.
We teach students from schools such as Heritage Xperiential Learning School (Sector 62), Shiv Nadar School, Gurgaon (DLF Phase 1), Suncity School (Sector 54), Manav Rachna International School (Sector 46), Kunskapsskolan International School, The Shri Ram School, Moulsari (DLF Phase 3) and Scottish High International School (Sector 57). (We are not affiliated with any school named here.)
