Gurgaon Home Tuition for ICSE & IGCSE: The Edge Over Coaching
ICSE and Cambridge IGCSE students in Gurgaon usually gain most from one-to-one home tuition when the tutor knows the exact board, subject and paper level the child will sit, and plans lessons around that rather than a common syllabus. A coaching institute teaches one pace to a room; a home tutor can slow down on the chapter your child finds hard, skip what they already know, and practise the style of question their board actually sets. This guide explains how the two boards differ, what good ICSE or IGCSE tuition looks like, and how to start with a free demo at home in Gurugram or online.

Why ICSE and IGCSE students need board-specific help
Both boards are demanding, but they are demanding in different ways, so the same tuition plan rarely suits both. A tutor who has taught mainly CBSE may be strong on content yet miss what ICSE examiners or Cambridge mark schemes reward.
ICSE: breadth, depth and written answers
The ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12) examinations are run by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). ICSE students typically carry a wide set of subjects, with long English and literature papers, separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and Mathematics that expects full working. Where ICSE students lose marks is usually presentation: steps left out in a Maths solution, a definition written loosely in Physics, or an English answer that describes instead of analysing.
IGCSE: tiers, command words and exam series
Cambridge IGCSE is an international qualification that Cambridge describes as intended for 14 to 16 year olds. Many subjects are tiered. In IGCSE Mathematics (0580), for example, Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3 and can be awarded grades C to G, while Extended candidates sit Papers 2 and 4 and can be awarded A* to E. Choosing the wrong tier caps what a student can achieve, so the tier decision is one of the first things we discuss with families. Cambridge questions also lean heavily on command words such as "explain", "describe", "calculate" and "suggest", and each one expects a different kind of answer.
Cambridge runs IGCSE exams in June and November, and it also offers a March series for schools in India. Your child's school decides which series it enters students for, so ask the school rather than assuming.
ICSE and IGCSE compared: what tuition should focus on
| Point | ICSE (Classes 9–10) | Cambridge IGCSE (usually Grades 9–10) |
|---|---|---|
| Exam body | CISCE, New Delhi | Cambridge International Education |
| When exams are held | Once a year, in the board exam season set by CISCE | June and November; March series available in India |
| Maths levels | One Mathematics paper for all | Core (grades C–G) or Extended (grades A*–E) in 0580 |
| Common weak spot | Incomplete working, loose definitions, long English answers | Misreading command words, wrong tier entry, unfamiliar paper format |
| What the tutor should bring | CISCE specimen papers, textbook exercises, step-by-step presentation | Past papers with mark schemes, tier advice, timed paper practice |

How one-to-one home tuition compares with coaching institutes
Coaching institutes in Gurgaon are mostly built around CBSE and entrance exams, which leaves ICSE and IGCSE students sitting through lessons pitched at another syllabus. One-to-one tuition avoids that mismatch. We only teach one-to-one, at home or live online, so everything below describes that model.
The pace belongs to one child
A student who is quick at algebra but unsure of vectors does not have to sit through a week of algebra revision. The tutor spends the time where the gaps are and moves on once the child can explain a method back.
Material matched to the board
An IGCSE Physics student needs Cambridge past papers and mark schemes; an ICSE Chemistry student needs the CISCE specimen paper and ICSE-style equations. Generic worksheets waste the few hours a week a busy student has.
Timing that fits a Gurgaon school day
International and ICSE schools in Gurgaon often run long days with sport, music and projects. A home tutor can come after school or on weekends, and online sessions help when traffic on Golf Course Road or Sohna Road makes travel impractical.
Parents can see what is happening
With one tutor and one student, parents can sit in for a few minutes, ask what was covered, and see the notebook. That is hard to do in a crowded coaching classroom.
What good ICSE or IGCSE tuition looks like in the first month
- A baseline check. The tutor works through a short set of questions from recent school tests or past papers to see where marks are being lost.
- A board-specific plan. For IGCSE, this includes the tier question; for ICSE, it includes which subjects need weekly written practice.
- Presentation habits early. Units, labelled diagrams, full working and precise definitions are practised from the first week, not the last.
- Timed practice. Once the concepts are secure, the student starts answering questions against the clock.
- A short update for parents. Families hear what was covered, what is still weak and what the next few weeks will focus on.
From our tutors: the most common IGCSE mistake we see is a student answering an "explain" question with a description. The facts are right, but the "because" is missing, so the marks do not come. We train students to underline the command word before they write anything.
From our tutors: ICSE Maths students often lose marks by doing two steps in their head. We ask them to write every line for the first month, then relax the rule once their accuracy is steady. It feels slow at first, but in our experience it reduces careless slips.

Subjects and pages for each board
- For Cambridge students, our IGCSE home tutors in Gurgaon page lists the subjects we cover, including Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
- For ICSE Class 10 Maths specifically, see the ICSE Class 10 Maths home tutor page.
- If you are comparing several boards and areas at once, our home tutors directory for Gurgaon brings them together.
After Class 10: ISC, IB DP or entrance exams
The Class 10 board is only half the decision. Many ICSE students continue to ISC; many IGCSE students move to the IB Diploma or A Levels; some switch to CBSE in Class 11 because of JEE or NEET. Each route changes what the Class 10 year should emphasise.
- Students staying with CISCE can read about ISC home tuition for Classes 11 and 12.
- Students heading to the IB Diploma can see our IB home tutors in Gurgaon.
- Families weighing an engineering route should read JEE Maths for IB and IGCSE students, which explains the gaps to fill, and ISC vs CBSE for JEE and NEET.

Fees and how to start
One-to-one home tuition with us usually costs ₹600 to ₹3,000 per hour depending on class, board and subject. The exact rate depends on the subject mix, how many sessions a week you need and whether sessions are at home or online; we confirm it before any paid session. Every engagement starts with a free demo so your child can meet the tutor first.
Frequently asked questions
Is home tuition better than coaching for ICSE and IGCSE?
For these two boards, one-to-one tuition usually fits better because most coaching institutes in Gurgaon build their courses around CBSE and entrance tests. A home tutor can teach to the ICSE specimen paper or the Cambridge mark scheme directly.
Should my child take Core or Extended in IGCSE Maths?
It depends on current performance and future plans. Extended opens grades A* to E and suits students heading to IB Maths, A Level Maths or engineering. Core is capped at grade C. Talk to the school and your tutor well before entries close.
Do you teach both ICSE and IGCSE in the same home?
Yes. Some families have one child in each board. We match a tutor to each child's board and subject rather than using one plan for both.
Which subjects can you cover?
We cover Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English and other core subjects for both boards. Tell us the exact subject code or textbook when you enquire so we can match the right tutor.
Can lessons be online if we travel or live outside Gurgaon?
Yes. Live online one-to-one sessions follow the same plan as home sessions, which helps families who travel or live elsewhere in India.
How experienced are the tutors?
Our tutors have 5–15 years of teaching experience, and the team includes IIT and NIT graduates. Ajay Vatsyayan Classes has been matching families with tutors in Gurgaon for 12+ years.
