Yes, a Gurgaon student can prepare for NEET or JEE from home, provided the plan has three parts: a firm grip on the NCERT and school syllabus, regular entrance-level practice with official previous papers, and timed tests that are reviewed question by question. A one-to-one home tutor helps with the parts a student cannot easily do alone: diagnosing weak chapters, explaining hard ideas and keeping the weekly plan honest. This guide sets out the 2026 exam facts from the National Testing Agency (NTA), a sensible home routine, and how to decide whether home preparation suits your child.

NEET and JEE Main in 2026: the official pattern
Both exams are run by NTA, but they test different subjects in different formats. The figures below come from the NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin and the JEE (Main) 2026 Information Bulletin. Always check the bulletin for your own exam year, because NTA can change the pattern.
| Feature | NEET (UG) 2026 | JEE Main 2026, Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech.) |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | Pen and paper, single day, single shift | Computer Based Test |
| Subjects and questions | Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Biology (Botany and Zoology) 90; all 180 compulsory | Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, 25 each (20 multiple-choice plus 5 numerical-value); 75 in total |
| Total marks | 720 (Physics 180, Chemistry 180, Biology 360) | 300 (100 per subject) |
| Time | 180 minutes | 3 hours |
| Marking | +4 correct, −1 incorrect, 0 unanswered | +4 correct, −1 incorrect, in both the multiple-choice and numerical sections |
| Sittings in 2026 | One exam; the 3 May sitting was cancelled and the exam was held again on 21 June 2026 | Two sessions: 21–30 January and 2–9 April 2026 |
Two points matter most for home preparation. First, every wrong answer costs a mark in both exams, so practice at home must include deciding when to leave a question. Second, NEET gives Biology half the marks, while JEE Main splits marks equally across three subjects, so the weekly timetable looks very different for each.
What is and is not confirmed for 2027
NTA published its examination calendar on 16 September 2026, covering exams up to March 2027. It lists JEE Main 2027 Session 1 on 22–24 and 28–30 January 2027, with 31 January held in reserve, and NTA describes these dates as tentative. NEET (UG) 2027 falls outside that calendar, so its date, mode and pattern are not confirmed yet. JEE Main 2027 Session 2 dates are also not confirmed. Students sitting in 2027 should watch neet.nta.nic.in and jeemain.nta.nic.in for the new bulletins.
What preparing at home actually involves
"Preparing at home" does not mean studying alone with a pile of books. It means the student's main place of work is home, with support brought to them. In practice there are three layers, and each needs its own time in the week.
Layer 1: the syllabus, taught properly
NEET questions lean heavily on NCERT, especially in Biology, and the JEE Main syllabus draws on Class 11 and 12 topics chapter by chapter. A student who has only skimmed a chapter at school cannot practise it at entrance level. The first job is to understand each chapter well enough to explain it.
Layer 2: entrance-level practice
Once a chapter is secure, the student moves to previous NTA papers and harder question sets on that chapter. For JEE this means multi-step problems and numerical-value answers. For NEET it means fast, accurate multiple-choice work across a very wide syllabus.
Layer 3: tests and honest review
Timed tests show whether knowledge holds up under pressure. The review afterwards, where each wrong or skipped question is sorted into "did not know", "misread" or "ran out of time", is where most improvement comes from.
A weekly routine that works at home
The pattern below is our tutors' guidance for a Class 12 student, not an official rule. Adjust it to school hours, travel and sleep.
- School days: one subject slot for new learning, tied to what the school taught that day, and one slot for practice questions on an older chapter.
- Two evenings a week: a one-to-one session with a tutor for the weakest subject, focused on doubts the student has written down in advance.
- One weekend morning: a timed test, either a single chapter or a full paper closer to the exam, taken under exam conditions with the phone in another room.
- The same weekend: a review session of that test, plus a quick revisit of the error notebook.
- One lighter day: rest matters. Tired students make careless errors, and negative marking punishes them.
From our tutors: at home, the biggest risk is not laziness but drift. A student sits down for "Physics" with no target and ends the evening having reread notes. We ask students to write a one-line goal before each slot, such as "15 questions on current electricity, then mark them", and to tick it off at the end. That single habit changes how an evening at home is spent.
How NEET and JEE preparation differ at home
NEET: breadth, recall and accuracy
With 90 of the 180 questions in Biology, NEET rewards thorough NCERT reading, diagrams and regular recall practice. Chemistry needs both memory and understanding, and Physics is where many Biology-minded students lose time. For the Physics part, our NEET Physics syllabus and exam pattern guide breaks down the units named in the official syllabus.
JEE: depth and problem solving
JEE Main gives Mathematics a full third of the paper, and the numerical-value questions leave no options to eliminate. Home practice has to include long, unfamiliar problems, not only textbook exercises. Our JEE Main maths chapter-wise weightage analysis and the JEE Physics tutor in Gurgaon page help decide where hours should go.
Students keeping both options open
Some Class 11 students take Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology and are not yet sure. Physics and Chemistry serve both exams, so they are safe to invest in early. Decide on Maths or Biology as the fourth priority by the end of Class 11, because both need serious weekly time in Class 12.
Where a one-to-one home tutor helps, and where it does not
A tutor cannot do the practice for a student. What a tutor can do is make every hour of the student's own work count.
- Diagnosis: finding the Class 11 gap behind a Class 12 problem, such as weak vector skills behind trouble with magnetism.
- Explanation at the student's pace: going over rotational motion or organic reaction mechanisms as many times as needed, without a room waiting.
- Test review: reading the student's actual working to see why marks were lost.
- Accountability: a fixed session each week makes it hard for backlogs to pile up unseen.
A tutor helps less when a student will not practise between sessions. In that case, fewer tutor hours and a firmer daily routine usually work better than more sessions.
From our tutors: when we look at a first test from a new NEET or JEE student, the lost marks are usually spread across a few chapters that were never properly finished at school, not across the whole syllabus. Rebuilding those chapters one at a time is quicker and less stressful than restarting everything.
Home tuition or a coaching institute?
Coaching institutes run a fixed schedule for many students at once, with regular tests. That suits a student who keeps pace comfortably and asks for help without being prompted. One-to-one home tuition suits a student who has gaps, needs a different pace in one subject, or cannot fit an institute's timings around a Gurgaon school day. Some families combine an institute with a home tutor for one weak subject.
Ajay Vatsyayan Classes offers only one-to-one home tuition across Gurgaon and live one-to-one online classes. Our tutors have 5–15 years of teaching experience, and the team includes IIT and NIT graduates. One-to-one home tuition with us usually costs ₹600 to ₹3,000 per hour depending on class, board and subject. Our article on what home tuition in Gurgaon should cost explains how rates vary.
Board matters too: CBSE, ISC, IB and IGCSE
Most NEET and JEE aspirants also sit a Class 12 board exam, and the board changes how much extra work is needed. CBSE and ISC students follow syllabuses close to NCERT, while IB and IGCSE students may need to add topics and practise the NTA question style. Our guide on ISC vs CBSE for JEE and NEET compares the two Indian boards. For board and entrance work together in the final year, see our Class 12 home tuition in Gurgaon page.
Frequently asked questions
Can a student prepare for NEET or JEE by studying at home?
Home preparation can work well if the student has a clear weekly plan, uses official previous papers and takes timed tests with proper review. Many students add a one-to-one tutor for the subjects they find hardest.
How many questions are in NEET 2026?
NEET (UG) 2026 had 180 compulsory questions: 45 in Physics, 45 in Chemistry and 90 in Biology, for 720 marks in 180 minutes, with +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one.
When is NEET 2027?
Not confirmed. NTA's calendar published in September 2026 runs only to March 2027 and does not include NEET (UG) 2027. Check neet.nta.nic.in for the 2027 bulletin.
When is JEE Main 2027 Session 1?
NTA's tentative calendar lists 22–24 and 28–30 January 2027, with 31 January as a reserve day. NTA has not yet announced the 2027 Session 2 dates.
Is home tuition or online tuition better for NEET and JEE?
Both work when they are one-to-one. Home sessions make it easier for the tutor to read written working, and online sessions save travel in a busy Class 12 week. Many Gurgaon families switch between the two with the same tutor.
Which subject should a home tutor cover first?
Start with the subject where timed tests show the most lost marks. For many NEET students that is Physics, and for many JEE students it is Mathematics, but a diagnostic test should decide.
