SyllabusNotified by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on 22 December 2025: 20 chemistry units

Sources, checked on 30 September 2026: the NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin, the NMC syllabus for NEET (UG) 2026, NTA's public notices of 15 May and 12 June 2026, all on neet.nta.nic.in.

What is not confirmed for 2027: in May 2026 the press reported the Union Education Minister as saying NEET would move to computer-based testing from 2027. No NTA bulletin or notice says this yet, so the 2027 mode, date and pattern are not confirmed. We will update this page when the 2027 bulletin appears.

Physical, organic and inorganic: how the 20 units divide

The NMC syllabus itself uses three headings: physical chemistry (Units 1–8), inorganic chemistry (Units 9–12) and organic chemistry (Units 13–19), followed by Unit 20, principles related to practical chemistry. Each part needs a different way of studying.

PartNMC units (NEET UG 2026)Where it is taughtWhat it rewards
Physical1 Some basic concepts; 2 Atomic structure; 3 Chemical bonding; 4 Chemical thermodynamics; 5 Solutions; 6 Equilibrium; 7 Redox reactions and electrochemistry; 8 Chemical kineticsMostly Class 11; Solutions, electrochemistry and kinetics in Class 12Accurate numericals with units, quick approximations, formula selection
Inorganic9 Periodicity; 10 p-block elements (Groups 13–18); 11 d- and f-block elements; 12 Coordination compoundsPeriodicity in Class 11; d- and f-block and coordination compounds in Class 12Exact recall of trends, exceptions and properties, plus VSEPR and crystal field reasoning
Organic13 Purification and characterisation; 14 Basic principles; 15 Hydrocarbons; 16 Halogen compounds; 17 Oxygen compounds; 18 Nitrogen compounds; 19 BiomoleculesUnits 13–15 in Class 11; 16–19 in Class 12Understanding mechanisms, then practising conversions and named reactions until they are automatic
Practical20 Principles related to practical chemistrySchool laboratory work in both yearsKnowing the chemistry behind titrations, salt analysis and preparations
  • Physical: the Unit 1 mole concept runs through everything. The list includes Kp and Kc, pH, buffers, solubility product, the Nernst equation, Kohlrausch's law, zero- and first-order rate equations and activation energy.
  • Inorganic: Unit 11 names K2Cr2O7, KMnO4 and lanthanoid contraction; Unit 12 covers Werner's theory, naming, isomerism and basic crystal field theory.
  • Organic: Unit 14 (inductive effect, resonance, hyperconjugation, intermediate stability) is the base for everything after it. Named reactions include ozonolysis, Friedel–Crafts, Reimer–Tiemann, Clemmensen, aldol, Cannizzaro and haloform.

From our tutors: many students treat organic chemistry as a list of reactions to memorise, and they plateau. We teach Unit 14's electron-movement ideas first, then ask of every new reaction, "where is the electron-rich site, and where is the electron-poor one?" Students who can answer that can rebuild a reaction they have forgotten.

Where NCERT is enough, and where it isn't

NCERT Class 11 and 12 Chemistry is the core text for NEET, and for inorganic chemistry and biomolecules the textbook line is often what is examined. It is not enough on its own for physical chemistry speed, organic practice, the p-block and the practical chemistry unit. We compared the NMC 2026 list with CBSE's 2026–27 Chemistry (043) curriculum, which prescribes the NCERT books.

AreaIs NCERT enough?What we add
Inorganic: periodicity, d- and f-block, coordination compoundsLargely yes, read line by line, tables and exceptions includedRecall tests; trend tables students build themselves
BiomoleculesLargely yesShort, frequent recall practice
p-block elements (NMC Unit 10)Watch out: CBSE 2026–27 assesses s- and p-block in Class 11 only formatively, not in the board theory paperUnit 10 taught in full, even if school covers it lightly
Physical chemistry numericalsConcepts yes; practice volume and speed noGraded, timed MCQ sets; quick approximation of logs and roots
Organic mechanisms and conversionsConcepts yes; mixed conversion practice noReaction maps across chapters and multi-step conversion drills
Practical chemistry (NMC Unit 20)Partly: it names lab work such as oxalic acid and Mohr's salt titrations against KMnO4, salt analysis, and preparing Mohr's salt, potash alum, acetanilide and iodoformThe chemistry behind each experiment, taught as exam content

The reverse also holds: CBSE includes corrosion and metal carbonyls, which the NMC list does not name, and NMC has no states-of-matter unit; these are learnt for the board only. ISC students should run the same check; see ISC vs CBSE for JEE and NEET.

Three worked NEET chemistry examples

One question each from three NMC units, every answer checked by calculation.

1. Mole concept (Unit 1 and Unit 13): an organic compound containing only C, H and O has molar mass 60 g/mol. Burning 3.0 g of it gives 4.4 g of CO2 and 1.8 g of H2O. Find its molecular formula.

C: 4.4 ÷ 44 = 0.10 mol CO2, so 0.10 mol C = 1.2 g.
H: 2 × (1.8 ÷ 18) = 0.20 mol H = 0.2 g.
O by difference: 3.0 − 1.2 − 0.2 = 1.6 g = 0.10 mol.
C : H : O = 1 : 2 : 1, so the empirical formula is CH2O (30 g/mol), and n = 60 ÷ 30 = 2.
Answer: C2H4O2. Common error: forgetting that each H2O carries two H atoms.

2. Ionic equilibrium (Unit 6): find the pH of 0.10 M acetic acid, given Ka = 1.8 × 10−5 and log 1.34 ≈ 0.13.

For a weak acid, [H+] ≈ √(Ka × c) = √(1.8 × 10−6) ≈ 1.34 × 10−3 M.
pH = −log(1.34 × 10−3) = 3 − 0.13 = 2.87.
Check: ionisation α ≈ 1.34 × 10−3 ÷ 0.10 ≈ 1.3%, under 5%, so the approximation holds (the full quadratic gives 2.88).
Answer: pH ≈ 2.87. Common error: treating acetic acid as a strong acid, which gives pH 1.

3. Chemical kinetics (Unit 8): a first-order reaction has rate constant k = 6.93 × 10−3 min−1. How long does it take for 87.5% of the reactant to react?

t1/2 = 0.693 ÷ k = 0.693 ÷ (6.93 × 10−3) = 100 min.
87.5% reacted leaves 1/8 = (1/2)3, so three half-lives have passed.
Answer: 300 min, the same as t = (2.303 ÷ k) log 8. Spotting fractions such as 1/4 and 1/8 avoids the logarithm and saves time.

How a one-to-one tutor plans Class 11 and 12 alongside the boards

Our tutors teach each chapter to board standard first, then take the same chapter to NEET level in the same week, so the two never compete for time. The plan follows a typical CBSE year and is adjusted to your child's school dates and board.

PeriodChemistry focusBoard and schoolNEET layer
Class 11, April–SeptemberMole concept, atomic structure, periodicity, bondingUnit tests and half-yearly examStoichiometry drills; VSEPR and bond order
Class 11, October–MarchThermodynamics, equilibrium, redox, organic basics, hydrocarbonsPractical file, project, final school exampH numericals; electron-movement ideas; p-block in full
Class 12, April–OctoberSolutions, electrochemistry, kinetics, d- and f-block, coordination, halogen and oxygen compoundsUnit tests, half-yearly, practicalsMixed Class 11–12 timed sets; organic reaction maps
Class 12, November–board examsAmines, biomolecules, revisionPre-boards and board examsWeekly full-length chemistry sets; error-log review
After the boardsWhole syllabusNoneFull NEET papers; NCERT inorganic read-throughs

A typical week

  • Two or three sessions of 60–90 minutes, at home or online: the school chapter, then graded questions up to NEET level.
  • Between sessions: a practice set and a timed test at about a minute per question (our suggestion; NEET does not set a chemistry time).
  • An error log tagging every lost mark by NMC unit and cause, and a short update to parents after each test.

The board rewards written reasoning and presentation; NEET rewards fast, accurate choices with a penalty for guessing. One tutor handling both keeps the two in balance. See also our Class 11 tuition in Gurgaon and Class 12 tuition in Gurgaon pages.

From our tutors: chemistry marks are most often lost not on hard questions but to negative marking on half-remembered inorganic facts. In timed sets we train one rule: if you cannot eliminate two options, leave it. The error log then shows how often those guesses would have been right.

Frequently asked questions

How many chemistry questions are in NEET, and how are they marked?

In NEET (UG) 2026: 45 compulsory questions for 180 marks, +4 correct, −1 wrong, 0 unanswered, in a 180-minute paper. The 2027 bulletin is not out yet; check neet.nta.nic.in for changes.

Is NCERT enough for NEET chemistry?

For inorganic chemistry and biomolecules it is the core, read line by line. It is not enough for physical chemistry speed, organic conversions, practical chemistry or, for CBSE students, the p-block, which the 2026–27 board theory paper does not assess.

When should NEET chemistry tuition start?

Ideally at the start of Class 11, where most physical chemistry and the organic foundations sit. Later starters get a diagnostic and a plan that revisits weak Class 11 units early.

Do you provide NEET chemistry home tuition near me in Gurgaon, or only online?
