What changes in Classes 6 to 8, board by board

Three years may look like a small window, yet the syllabus, the language rules and the style of assessment all shift noticeably between Class 6 and Class 8.

CBSE: new NCERT books and a third language

NCERT's textbook page lists the new NCF-SE books for all three middle-school classes: Ganita Prakash for maths, Curiosity for science, Poorvi for English, Exploring Society: India and Beyond for social science, Malhar for Hindi and Deepakam for Sanskrit. For Classes 7 and 8, Ganita Prakash comes in two parts. CBSE has made a third language, called R3, compulsory in Class 6 from 2026–27, and its Secondary Curriculum 2026–27 phases it into Class 7 in 2027–28 and Class 8 from 2028–29. The same document matters to Class 8 families for a second reason: students entering Class 9 from 2026–27 take one common Maths and Science course, with optional Advanced papers, because CBSE is discontinuing the Standard and Basic split.

ICSE schools

Up to Class 8, ICSE schools set their own books and tests, since CISCE's first board exam comes at the end of Class 10. CISCE's regulations also expect every ICSE candidate to have studied a third language from at least Class 5 to Class 8. Our tutors often see ICSE middle-school science taught as separate physics, chemistry and biology, with more descriptive writing than a CBSE student would meet.

Cambridge Lower Secondary

Cambridge International says Lower Secondary is typically for learners aged 11 to 14, which roughly lines up with Grades 6 to 8 and leads on to IGCSE. Tutors work from the school's scheme of work and the Cambridge stage your child is in, because topics are not tied to one national book.

IB Middle Years Programme

The IB describes the MYP as a programme for students aged 11 to 16, so Grades 6 to 8 are its first three years. Schools grade MYP work against published criteria for each subject, which is why our tutors ask to see the task sheet and its criteria before helping with any unit assessment.
