The best books for ISC Class 12 Maths are a small set with clear jobs: one concept textbook written for the ISC syllabus (usually the one your school uses), one practice book with plenty of graded exercises, and CISCE's own specimen paper plus past ISC papers. CISCE's 2027 Mathematics syllabus does not name any textbook, so no single book is "official". Most students need two books and the papers, not five books.
This guide is part of our ISC home tutors in Gurgaon series for Class 11 and 12. It starts with what CISCE actually prescribes, then explains each role a book can play, describes the ISC maths books students ask us about most (including the ML Aggarwal vs OP Malhotra question), and ends with a plan for which book to use when, and how many are enough.
CISCE prescribes a syllabus for ISC Mathematics, not a textbook. The official ISC Mathematics (860) syllabus for the 2027 examination lists the units, topics, marks and project work, but it does not name or recommend any book. We did not find any other CISCE document that prescribes a maths textbook for ISC. In practice, each school chooses its own textbook, so the first book to check is the one on your school's book list.
What the syllabus does fix is the scope and the marks. For Class XII in the 2027 examination there are two papers: Paper I, a three-hour theory paper worth 80 marks, and Paper II, project work worth 20 marks. The theory marks are divided across seven units:
| Unit (ISC Class XII, 2027) | Marks | Main topics |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Relations and Functions | 10 | Types of relations and functions, composite and inverse functions, inverse trigonometric functions |
| 2. Algebra | 10 | Matrices and determinants, solving linear equations with matrices |
| 3. Calculus | 35 | Continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, integrals, applications of integrals, differential equations |
| 4. Vector Algebra | 5 | Vectors, scalar and vector products |
| 5. Three-Dimensional Geometry | 6 | Lines and planes in space |
| 6. Linear Programming | 5 | Formulating and solving LPPs graphically |
| 7. Probability | 9 | Conditional probability, Bayes' theorem, probability distributions |
| Total (theory) | 80 | Plus 20 marks of project work (two projects of 10 marks each) |
Two things follow for book choice. First, calculus carries 35 of the 80 theory marks, so the calculus chapters of whatever book you use deserve the most practice. Second, the 2027 marks table lists all seven units in one theory paper, without the Section B or Section C option that the ISC 2026 specimen paper used. Books and question banks written for older syllabuses may still be arranged into sections, so check the contents page against the 2027 syllabus before you buy. For the full topic list, see our guide to the ISC Class 12 Maths syllabus for 2027.
Every book on an ISC student's desk should have one job. Trouble starts when two books do the same job, or when a student buys a thick question bank before the concepts are clear. The table below shows the roles we plan around.
| Role | What it does | Typical choice | Needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concept book | Explains each topic in the ISC order and language, with solved examples | Your school's ISC textbook | Yes, one only |
| Practice book | Many graded exercises per chapter, from routine to board-hard | A second ISC-specific book, or NCERT with NCERT Exemplar | Yes, one only |
| Specimen paper | Shows the format, question types and marking of the exam you will sit | CISCE's specimen question paper for your exam year | Yes |
| Past papers | Real ISC board questions at the real standard | Past ISC question papers, used chapter-wise and then as full papers | Yes |
| Extra question bank | More questions of the same kind | A second practice book or a "sample paper" book | Only for weak chapters |
| Own notes | Formulas, standard results and your own common mistakes | A notebook you write yourself | Yes, and it costs nothing |
If you only remember one rule from this guide, make it this: one concept book, one practice book, and the papers. Everything else is optional.
For ISC Class 12 Maths, the concept book should almost always be the textbook your school uses. Your teacher sets homework and class tests from it, explains topics in its order, and often uses its notation. Using a different concept book at home means translating between two styles every day, which wastes time and confuses weaker students.
Read the section your teacher covered that day, close the book and redo two of the solved examples on paper, then attempt the exercise. Mark every question you could not do, and come back to those before the chapter test. Do not skip the proofs and derivations the syllabus asks for; ISC papers can ask a student to prove a standard property rather than only use it.
From our tutors: the most common book problem we see in ISC Class 12 is not the wrong book but a half-used one. A student has done the first few exercises of every chapter and the last few of none. We ask students to tick every exercise question they have finished in pencil. It sounds simple, but it shows parents and students exactly where the gaps are, and it stops the urge to buy another book too early.
The books below are the ones parents and students in Gurgaon ask us about most. We describe them in general terms, as they are commonly published and used. Titles, authors and contents change between editions, so always check the current edition's contents page against the 2027 syllabus. We do not sell books and have no link with any publisher.
| Book (as commonly known) | Written for | Best role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISC Mathematics, Class XII, by O.P. Malhotra, S.K. Gupta and Anubhuti Gangal | ISC | Concept book | Used as the class textbook in many ISC schools; theory, solved examples and exercises in the ISC topic order |
| Understanding ISC Mathematics, Class XII, by M.L. Aggarwal | ISC | Concept book or practice book | Known for a large number of solved examples and exercises; popular for self-study and extra practice |
| NCERT Mathematics, Class XII (Parts I and II) | CBSE and NCERT-based boards | Clear second explanation; practice for common topics | Free to read online; covers most ISC Class XII topics but is not written for the ISC syllabus |
| NCERT Exemplar Problems, Mathematics Class XII | NCERT | Harder practice on common topics | Useful for students who find their textbook exercises easy |
| R.D. Sharma, Mathematics for Class 12 | Mainly CBSE | Extra question bank | Very large question bank; useful chapter by chapter, but check which ISC topics it covers |
| Past-paper and specimen-paper compilations | ISC | Exam practice | Published by several publishers; check answers against official marking where possible |
Much of ISC Class 12 Maths overlaps with the NCERT-based CBSE course: relations and functions, inverse trigonometric functions, matrices and determinants, calculus, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability all appear in both. That is why NCERT and CBSE question banks are useful to ISC students. The differences are in detail and in style. The ISC syllabus has its own sub-topics and wording, and ISC papers have their own format. Use a CBSE-oriented book as a practice source, not as the concept book, and always check a topic against the ISC syllabus before you spend time on it.
The "ML Aggarwal vs OP Malhotra" question has the same answer as most book debates: they are better used for different jobs than as rivals. Whichever one your school uses is your concept book. The other can be your practice book, if you need one.
| Situation | Concept book | Practice book |
|---|---|---|
| School uses O.P. Malhotra | O.P. Malhotra | M.L. Aggarwal, for chapters where the student needs more solved examples and practice |
| School uses M.L. Aggarwal | M.L. Aggarwal | Often not needed; add NCERT Exemplar or past papers for harder questions |
| School uses another book or its own notes | The school's book or notes | One ISC-specific book (either), chosen after looking at a sample chapter |
| Student is self-studying or catching up | The book with more solved examples, usually preferred for self-study | Past ISC papers, chapter by chapter |
How to decide in a bookshop or online preview: open the same chapter, say applications of derivatives, in both books. Read one solved example in each. Pick the book whose explanation the student can follow without help. That book will be used; the other one will sit on a shelf.

CISCE publishes specimen question papers on cisce.org. The note on the ISC 2026 Mathematics specimen paper says it gives a realistic format of the board paper and should be used as a practice tool, that board questions can be set from any part of the syllabus, and that the topic weightage in the syllabus will be followed. Because the format can change from one year to the next, always use the specimen paper for the year you will sit the exam. Our guide to ISC specimen papers for 2027 explains how to use them in stages.
CISCE also publishes "Analysis of Pupil Performance" documents for selected ICSE and ISC subjects. According to CISCE, these give examiners' comments on common errors, suggestions for teachers and the marking scheme, question by question. When an ISC Mathematics edition is available, it is one of the most useful free resources for learning how marks are actually given.
Not every unit needs the same treatment. The table below shows where students usually need extra practice beyond the concept book, based on the 2027 marks and on the difficulties we see most in ISC Class 12.
| Unit (marks) | Concept book enough? | Where extra practice helps |
|---|---|---|
| Relations and Functions (10) | Usually, if all exercises are done | Inverse trigonometric identities and principal values; past-paper questions |
| Algebra (10) | Usually | Properties of determinants and solving equations by the matrix method; accuracy drills |
| Calculus (35) | No, for most students | Integration methods, definite integrals, applications of derivatives and differential equations: a practice book plus past papers |
| Vector Algebra (5) | Usually | Mixed questions linking vectors to geometry |
| Three-Dimensional Geometry (6) | Often not | Lines and planes, shortest distance, angle questions; extra practice set |
| Linear Programming (5) | Yes | Word problems: forming the constraints correctly |
| Probability (9) | Often not | Bayes' theorem and probability distribution questions; extra word problems |
Calculus is where a second book pays for itself. It is 35 of the 80 theory marks, and it is also where marks are lost to small slips in long working. For one calculus chapter in depth, see our guide to application of derivatives for ISC Class 12, with worked examples for every question type. Our ISC Class 12 Maths formula sheet is a good base for the notes notebook described below.
ISC schools, including those in Gurgaon, do not all teach Class 12 chapters in the same order, so follow your school's order. What matters is the same four-step loop for every chapter: concept book, practice book, past-paper questions, then add to your notes.
| Stage | Books in use | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| April to July | Concept book for each new chapter; practice book for any chapter where textbook exercises felt hard | Clear concepts, all textbook exercises done |
| August to October | Concept and practice books for the remaining chapters; chapter-wise past-paper questions for finished chapters | Finish the syllabus; start exam-style questions |
| November and December | Specimen paper for the exam year; past papers chapter-wise; own notes | Revision of every unit; project work completed as the school requires |
| January to the exam | Full past papers and the specimen paper, timed; own notes and error log | Exam temperament, speed and presentation |
Months are a guide only. Schools set their own dates for pre-boards and project submission, and CISCE sets the exam timetable. Our ISC board exam 2027 preparation plan covers the timetable and a month-by-month revision plan.
From our tutors: in the final two months we ask students to stop starting new books altogether. Instead, each student keeps an error log: every question they got wrong in a past paper, with one line on why (concept, calculation, or misreading). Before each mock, they re-solve the log, not a new chapter. Students usually find that the same few mistakes keep coming back, and fixing those does more than any new question bank.
For most ISC Class 12 students, two books plus the papers is enough: one concept book, one practice book (only if needed), the specimen paper and past ISC papers. More books usually means less depth in each.
| Student | Recommended set | Optional |
|---|---|---|
| Comfortable with maths, boards only | School textbook + specimen paper + past ISC papers | NCERT Exemplar for harder calculus practice |
| Average, wants a high board score | School textbook + one ISC practice book + specimen paper + past papers | Extra practice for calculus and probability only |
| Weak in maths or behind in school | School textbook, fully done + past papers chapter-wise | A second book only after the textbook exercises are finished |
| Boards and JEE together | School textbook + NCERT + a JEE practice book + past ISC papers + JEE previous year questions | A second JEE book for weak chapters |
Three rules keep a book plan under control:
Do not forget Paper II. Project work carries 20 of the 100 marks. The syllabus gives a list of suggested project assignments, such as using graphs to explain increasing and decreasing functions or local maxima and minima, but no book is needed for it. What it needs is time planned early in the year, and your school's guidance on the format.
ISC Class 12 Maths and JEE Main maths overlap heavily in calculus, algebra, vectors, three-dimensional geometry and probability, but JEE questions need more speed and more multi-step problem solving. The official JEE (Main) 2026 syllabus also includes Class 11 chapters that ISC Class 12 does not test.
Our guide to the best books for JEE maths covers the JEE side in detail, and our JEE Maths home tutors in Gurgaon page explains how we combine the two.
There is no single best book, and CISCE's 2027 Mathematics syllabus does not prescribe one. For most students the best set is the ISC textbook their school uses as the concept book, one practice book if needed, CISCE's specimen paper for the exam year, and past ISC papers.
No. The ISC Mathematics (860) syllabus for 2027 sets out the units, topics, marks and project work, but it does not name a textbook, and we found no CISCE document that prescribes one. Schools choose their own books.
Use the one your school follows as your concept book. If you need extra practice, the other can be your practice book. If you are choosing freely, compare the same chapter in both and pick the one whose solved examples the student can follow without help.
NCERT is useful because it covers most of the same topics, and it is free to read online. But it is not written for the ISC syllabus or paper format, so it should not replace an ISC textbook, specimen paper and past ISC papers.
It can be a useful extra question bank, chapter by chapter, because it has a very large number of questions. It is written mainly for CBSE, so check each topic against the ISC 2027 syllabus, and use it only after your ISC textbook exercises are done.
Yes, for practising topics that are in the 2027 syllabus. But the 2027 Class XII marks table has no Section B or Section C choice, unlike the 2026 specimen paper, so practise the 2027 format with the 2027 specimen paper.
Two books plus papers is enough for most students: one concept book, one practice book if needed, the specimen paper and past ISC papers. Students also preparing for JEE add NCERT, one JEE practice book and JEE previous year questions.
Yes. A tutor who has seen your child solve questions can tell whether the gap is concepts, practice or exam technique, and can pick the right questions from the books you already own. Our ISC Maths tutors in Gurgaon teach at home or online, around the school's own chapter order.
