Maths Important Chapters for JEE Mains 2027 and JEE Advanced

By the Ajay Vatsyayan Classes Home Tutors Team. Reviewed by Ajay Vatsyayan (B.Tech; Maths & Physics, IB and Cambridge IGCSE experienced). Last reviewed: 28 September 2026.

For JEE Main 2027, the maths chapters that deserve the most time are coordinate geometry, calculus (especially integration, limits and derivatives) and complex numbers with quadratic equations. In our count of the nine official April 2026 papers, these made up the largest share of questions. For JEE Advanced, calculus and analytical geometry lead again. But the Advanced syllabus adds topics that the JEE Main 2026 syllabus does not list, such as planes, tangents and normals, Rolle's theorem and the mean value theorem, and vector triple products. In the 2026 Advanced papers, the marks were also spread more evenly across all ten syllabus areas.

This guide explains which chapters matter most for each exam and why, using the official 2026 syllabus documents, a count of the 2026 papers, and what our tutors see in Gurgaon students' work every year. If you want one-to-one help to build the plan, see our JEE maths tutor in Gurgaon page.

The short answer: most important chapters for JEE maths

PriorityJEE Main (for 2027)JEE Advanced
HighestCoordinate geometry (conics above all); integral calculus; limits, continuity and derivatives; complex numbers and quadratic equationsDifferential calculus (including Rolle's theorem, mean value theorem, tangents and normals); integral calculus and differential equations; 2D analytical geometry (including tangents, normals and parametric forms)
HighMatrices and determinants; 3D geometry (lines); statistics and probability; sequences and series; vectorsTrigonometry (including general solutions); probability and statistics; algebra (quadratics, complex numbers, P&C, binomial); matrices
Must not skipSets, relations and functions; trigonometry; permutations and combinations; differential equations; binomial theorem3D geometry (including planes); vectors (including triple products); sets, relations and functions

The Main column comes from our count of 225 JEE Main questions from 2026. The Advanced column comes from our count of both JEE Advanced 2026 maths papers, together with the topics the official Advanced syllabus adds. Both columns rest on one year of papers, so read them as priorities, not guarantees.

How we ranked the chapters

We used four sources, in this order of authority:

  1. The official syllabi. For JEE Main, the Syllabus for JEE (Main) – 2026 PDF linked from the NTA website, jeemain.nta.nic.in. It has 14 maths units, from sets, relations and functions to trigonometry. For JEE Advanced, Annexure-I of the JEE (Advanced) 2026 Information Brochure on jeeadv.ac.in. These define what can be asked at all.
  2. The official 2026 question papers. NTA's nine published April 2026 B.Tech shift papers, and the two JEE Advanced 2026 papers published on jeeadv.ac.in. We classified every maths question ourselves.
  3. Prerequisite links. Some chapters matter because the rest of the syllabus depends on them, even when they get few questions of their own.
  4. Tutor experience. Where students in Gurgaon actually lose marks. We label this clearly as experience, not data.

Neither NTA nor the JEE Advanced organisers publish chapter-wise weightage. Any percentage you see, including ours, is someone's count of past papers. The JEE Advanced 2026 brochure also says that the marking scheme is given in the "Instructions to Candidates" at the time of the exam, so the question types can change from year to year.

Maths important chapters for JEE Mains 2027

The full method and count tables are in our JEE Main maths chapter-wise weightage analysis. In short, across nine April 2026 shifts:

  • Coordinate geometry had 32 of 225 questions (14.2%), with 3 or 4 in every shift. Conics alone accounted for 18.
  • Integral calculus had 26 (11.6%), with at least 2 in every shift.
  • Complex numbers and quadratic equations had 20 (8.9%).
  • Limits, continuity, differentiability and derivatives had 18 (8.0%), and so did statistics and probability, which had exactly 2 in every shift.
  • Calculus as a whole (Units 7 to 9) had 53 questions (23.6%).

Why coordinate geometry comes first for Main

It is the largest single unit, and the questions follow recognisable families: locus problems that end in a conic, eccentricity and latus rectum, chords of a circle, and triangle centres. The JEE Main 2026 syllabus asks for conic sections "in standard forms", so the work is mostly about fluency with standard results. That is why hours spent here pay back quickly.

Why calculus is the backbone

Calculus is split across three units (limits and derivatives, integrals, and differential equations), so no single unit looks as large as coordinate geometry. Together, though, it is the biggest block in the paper. It also shows up inside other questions: area under a conic, a maximum found by differentiation, or a function defined by an integral. Our guide to calculus for JEE covers the chapter order in detail.

Why the "small" units still matter

Binomial theorem, differential equations and trigonometry each appeared in 8 of the 9 shifts. Sets, relations and functions appeared in all 9. They are short chapters with repeated question styles, so the marks are cheap to secure.

From our tutors: a common pattern in Class 12 is a student who is strong in calculus but keeps losing the relations-and-functions question and the statistics question. They are "too easy to revise". Those two questions are worth 8 marks in every paper. We schedule them as short weekly drills rather than leaving them to the final month.

JEE Advanced maths important chapters

The 2026 brochure says that JEE (Advanced) 2026 had two compulsory papers of three hours each, held on 17 May 2026, each with separate Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections. We classified all 34 maths questions in the two 2026 papers (16 in Paper 1 and 18 in Paper 2) under the syllabus headings of the Advanced brochure. By the section maxima printed on the papers, maths carried 60 marks in each paper, 120 in total. Because Advanced questions carry different marks (from 2 to 4 in 2026), we counted marks as well as questions.

Advanced syllabus area (2026 brochure)Questions (of 34)Marks (of 120)Share of marks
Differential calculus51915.8%
Analytical geometry: two dimensions51613.3%
Integral calculus (including differential equations and area)51411.7%
Trigonometry41310.8%
Probability and statistics31210.0%
Algebra (complex numbers, quadratics, progressions, P&C, binomial)31210.0%
Matrices3119.2%
Analytical geometry: three dimensions286.7%
Sets, relations and functions286.7%
Vectors275.8%
Total34120100%

Please read this table with care. It comes from one year and only two papers, and 5 of the 34 questions mixed two areas (for example, a matrix question that also used complex numbers). Moving one 4-mark question changes an area's share by more than three percentage points. What it does show:

  • Calculus is still the largest block. Differential and integral calculus together carried 33 of 120 marks (27.5%).
  • Geometry is close behind. 2D, 3D and vectors together carried 31 marks (25.8%). Several 2D questions needed tangents to parabolas, circles and ellipses, which the Advanced syllabus lists and the Main 2026 syllabus does not.
  • Nothing was small. Every one of the ten areas carried at least 7 marks. Advanced rewards breadth, and one weak area costs much more than in Main.
  • Trigonometry mattered more than in Main. It had 4 questions and 13 marks, including matching lists of trigonometric equations. The Advanced syllabus explicitly includes the "general solution of trigonometric equations".

Using the table to plan

If you want a single list of maths important chapters for JEE Advanced, start with calculus and 2D geometry, because they carry the most marks and support everything else. But do not rank the other eight areas by their 2026 marks, because the sample is too small for that. Instead, look at your own mock results. Advanced questions often have more than one correct option or ask you to match lists, and partial marks depend on which options you choose. So a shaky area costs more here than its share of marks suggests. A student who is sound in all ten areas usually does better than one who is excellent in three.

What JEE Advanced adds to the JEE Main syllabus

This table compares the wording of the two 2026 documents: the NTA "Syllabus for JEE (Main) – 2026" and Annexure-I of the JEE (Advanced) 2026 Information Brochure. "Not listed" means the Main 2026 syllabus text does not name the topic. It does not mean a Main question can never touch the idea.

From our tutors: the gap topics are where Advanced-aiming students who studied "for Main first" get caught. Tangents and normals to conics are the clearest case. A student who knows every standard ellipse result can still get stuck on a tangent condition in Advanced. We teach the Advanced extensions straight after the matching Main topic, while it is fresh, not as a separate course a year later.

Prerequisite chains: why the order you study matters

Some chapters get few questions of their own but decide how well you do in the big ones. These are the four chains our tutors plan around:

  1. Functions → limits and continuity → derivatives → integrals → differential equations. Weak graph sense (modulus, greatest integer, inverse trigonometric functions) shows up later as mistakes in continuity-counting and area questions.
  2. Quadratic equations → complex numbers → conics. Conditions on roots (the discriminant, the location of roots) come up again in tangent conditions and in line–conic intersection.
  3. Straight lines → circles → parabola, ellipse, hyperbola. Distance from a point to a line, slopes and locus methods are the tools for everything that follows.
  4. Vectors → 3D geometry. Shortest distance, the foot of a perpendicular and (for Advanced) planes are all dot and cross products underneath.

This is why "important chapters" is not only about the number of questions. Trigonometry had just 12 of 225 JEE Main 2026 questions in our count, but weak trigonometry slows a student down in calculus, complex numbers and conics too.

Worked examples: Main style and Advanced-only topics

1. Shortest distance between skew lines (in both syllabi)

Find the shortest distance between the lines (x − 1)/2 = (y − 2)/3 = (z − 3)/4 and (x − 2)/3 = (y − 4)/4 = (z − 5)/5.

  • Points on the lines: A = (1, 2, 3) and B = (2, 4, 5), so AB = (1, 2, 2).
  • Directions: b1 = (2, 3, 4) and b2 = (3, 4, 5).
  • b1 × b2 = (3·5 − 4·4, 4·3 − 2·5, 2·4 − 3·3) = (−1, 2, −1), with magnitude √6.
  • Distance = |AB · (b1 × b2)| / |b1 × b2| = |−1 + 4 − 2| / √6 = 1/√6.

2. Distance of a point from a plane (Advanced syllabus)

Find the distance of the point (1, 2, 3) from the plane 2x − y + 2z = 5.

  • Distance = |2(1) − 1(2) + 2(3) − 5| / √(22 + 12 + 22) = |2 − 2 + 6 − 5| / √9 = 1/3.

The JEE Main 2026 syllabus does not list planes. The JEE Advanced 2026 syllabus does, and a Paper 1 question in 2026 was built around planes.

3. Lagrange's mean value theorem (Advanced syllabus)

For f(x) = x3 on [0, 2], find the c that the mean value theorem guarantees.

  • The average slope is (f(2) − f(0))/(2 − 0) = (8 − 0)/2 = 4.
  • f′(c) = 3c2 = 4, so c = 2/√3, which lies inside (0, 2) as the theorem requires.

4. Vector triple product (Advanced syllabus)

For a = i, b = j and c = i + j + k, find a × (b × c).

  • Use a × (b × c) = (a · c) b − (a · b) c.
  • a · c = 1 and a · b = 0, so the result is 1 · j − 0 = j.
  • Check directly: b × c = j × (i + j + k) = −k + i = i − k. Then i × (i − k) = 0 − (i × k) = −(−j) = j. The two methods agree.

5. Cube roots of unity (named in the Advanced syllabus)

If ω is a non-real cube root of unity, find (1 + ω)3.

  • Since 1 + ω + ω2 = 0, we have 1 + ω = −ω2.
  • (1 + ω)3 = (−ω2)3 = −ω6 = −(ω3)2 = −1.

Examples 2 to 5 take only a few lines each. The difficulty in Advanced is that these ideas come combined with others, often in questions with more than one correct option.

How to split your time: Main-first vs Advanced-aiming students

These splits come from our tutors' experience with Class 11 and 12 students. Adjust them to your mock results.

StageMain-first studentAdvanced-aiming student
Class 11Straight lines, circles and conics in standard form; quadratics and complex numbers; sequences; statistics; functions; trigonometry basicsSame core, plus tangents and normals to conics, general solutions of trigonometric equations, cube roots of unity and logarithms, all taught alongside the Main topics
Class 12Calculus in depth, with integration and definite-integral properties as the priority; matrices and systems; 3D lines; vectors; probabilityCalculus plus Rolle's theorem, the mean value theorem, limit of a sum, planes and triple products; more multi-concept problems
After the JEE Main sessionsRevise weak units using error logsShift to Advanced papers from jeeadv.ac.in and the multiple-correct and matching-list formats

If your child is still deciding between the two, prepare for Main in depth first and add the Advanced extensions topic by topic. A strong Main foundation is also the qualifying route to Advanced. For Indian candidates, the JEE Advanced 2026 brochure required a place among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in the JEE (Main) 2026 B.E./B.Tech paper, along with other criteria. Check the current brochure for your year.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most important maths chapters for JEE Mains 2027?

Based on our count of the April 2026 papers: coordinate geometry (especially conics), integral calculus, limits and derivatives, and complex numbers with quadratic equations. After those come matrices and determinants, 3D geometry, statistics and probability, sequences and vectors. Check the JEE Main 2027 syllabus when NTA releases it.

What are the JEE Advanced maths important chapters?

In the two 2026 Advanced papers, differential calculus, 2D analytical geometry and integral calculus carried the most marks. But every syllabus area carried at least 7 of the 120 maths marks. Advanced also tests topics the Main 2026 syllabus does not list, such as planes, tangents and normals, the mean value theorem and triple products.

Is the JEE Advanced maths syllabus bigger than JEE Main?

Yes, going by the two 2026 documents. The Advanced syllabus adds several topics, including planes, triple products, Rolle's theorem and the mean value theorem, the definite integral as a limit of a sum, tangents and normals to conics, and general solutions of trigonometric equations. The comparison table above lists them.

Can I skip any chapter for JEE Main maths?

We would not. In our count, even the smallest units (binomial theorem, differential equations and trigonometry) each appeared in 8 of 9 shifts in April 2026. Skipping one usually means giving up about one question in most papers.

Which maths chapters are common to JEE Main and Advanced?

All 14 JEE Main units have a matching area in the Advanced syllabus. The difference is depth and a few extra topics. So time spent on Main chapters is never wasted for Advanced.

Do NTA or IIT publish chapter-wise weightage for maths?

No. The official documents give the syllabus and exam pattern. Any chapter-wise figure is an analysis of past papers. Ours names the exact papers used and is labelled by year.

When should Class 11 students start Advanced-level topics?

Our tutors add each Advanced extension straight after the matching Main topic. For example, tangents and normals are taught right after the standard conic results. This avoids a second pass through the same chapter in Class 12.
