Class 10 home tuition in Patna from Ajay Vatsyayan Classes (Patna Tutors) gives your child one-to-one lessons at home or online, with a tutor who follows your school's CBSE or ICSE syllabus and plans the whole year up to the board exams. This guide explains how the board exams are set up for 2026–27, which chapters carry the most marks, and what a sensible month-by-month plan looks like. It also covers sample papers, exam stress, choosing a Class 11 stream and what to expect from a home tutor.
Before you plan tuition, it helps to know exactly what your child will be tested on. Everything in this section comes from the CBSE curriculum documents for 2026–27 and CBSE's official circulars. Rules do change, so please check the official CBSE curriculum page for 2026–27 and your school's notices as well.
In the main subjects, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and English Language and Literature, the board paper is worth 80 marks. The other 20 marks come from internal assessment done by the school. That internal part is not a formality. In Maths it is made up of pen-paper tests and multiple assessments, a portfolio and lab activities. In Science it covers periodic assessment, multiple assessment, a portfolio and practical work. A student who takes the portfolio and practicals seriously goes into the board paper with those 20 marks already secured.
| Subject (CBSE) | Board paper | How the paper is built |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics (Standard 041 / Basic 241) | 80 marks, 3 hours, plus 20 internal | Seven units: Number Systems 6, Algebra 20, Coordinate Geometry 6, Geometry 15, Trigonometry 12, Mensuration 10, Statistics and Probability 11 |
| Science (086) | 80 marks, 3 hours, plus 20 internal | Chemical Substances 25, World of Living 25, Natural Phenomena 12, Effects of Current 13, Natural Resources 5; about a third of questions carry an internal choice |
| Social Science (087) | 80 marks plus 20 internal | History, Geography, Political Science and Economics carry 20 marks each; map pointing is part of History and Geography |
| English Language and Literature | 80 marks plus 20 internal | Reading 20, Writing and Grammar 20, Literature 40 (First Flight and Footprints Without Feet) |
One detail that parents often miss is that some topics in the Class 10 books are assessed only in school, not in the board paper. For 2026–27, CBSE lists Periodic Classification of Elements, the Evolution topics, and Motor, Electromagnetic Induction and Electric Generator in Science as assessed only formatively. In Social Science, The Age of Industrialisation is assessed only through periodic assessment, and only parts of The Making of a Global World and Globalisation and the Indian Economy are examined in the board paper. Knowing this stops a student spending weeks on something the board paper will not ask.
CBSE has introduced two board examinations for Class 10. Its notification of 25 June 2025 set out the scheme, and it has now been used once. In 2026 the main examination ran from 17 February to 11 March, and the second examination ran from 15 to 21 May. CBSE declared the second-examination results on 18 July 2026, and for regular students the better of the two performances counted in the final result.
For the 2027 examinations, CBSE's circular of September 2026 on the List of Candidates confirms that the scheme continues. Here is how it works:
For parents, the practical point is simple. Plan for the February–March examination as though it were the only one. The May sitting is a safety net for one or two weak subjects. It is not a reason to prepare less the first time, because a second attempt means another round of full-syllabus revision just as Class 11 is about to begin.
Students who are in Class 10 in 2026–27 can still choose between Mathematics Standard (041) and Mathematics Basic (241). The syllabus and the 80-mark, three-hour format are the same for both. The difference is in the kind of questions. In the Standard paper, roughly 54 per cent of marks test remembering and understanding. The rest test application and higher-order analysis. In the Basic paper, remembering and understanding make up about 75 per cent. The Basic paper is written for students who do not plan to take Mathematics further.
If your child is in Class 9 this year, note that the scheme is changing. CBSE's scheme of studies says the Basic and Standard split is being discontinued. In its place will be one common Mathematics paper and one common Science paper, and students may add an optional Mathematics Advanced or Science Advanced paper. That paper is worth 25 marks, lasts one hour and will be examined in Class 10 from 2027–28. The Advanced marks are not added to the overall total, but clearing it is noted on the marksheet. Ask your school how it is putting this in place.
ICSE families in Patna will find the pattern quite different from CBSE. These points come from the CISCE regulations and syllabuses for ICSE 2027.
In Group I and Group II subjects, 80 per cent of the marks come from the external paper and 20 per cent from internal assessment. In Group III the split is 50:50. A few formats are worth knowing:
The regulations also say plainly that clear, cogent expression and neat, accurate presentation are taken into account in every subject. That is a good reason to practise writing answers, not just reading them.
Any candidate who has appeared in the ICSE main examination can take the Improvement Examination in the same year, in up to two subjects. The higher of the two marks is counted. As with CBSE, treat this as a backup, not a plan.
Every chapter matters, but they do not all carry the same weight. Here is where a Class 10 student in Patna usually gains or loses the most marks, and where a tutor's time is best spent.
For CBSE, Algebra is the biggest unit at 20 marks. It covers polynomials, pairs of linear equations, quadratic equations and arithmetic progressions. Geometry comes next at 15 marks (triangles and circles), then Trigonometry at 12, which includes heights and distances. Together these three units make up almost 60 per cent of the paper. Mensuration, Statistics and Probability are shorter and more formula-based. They are often the fastest marks to secure, provided the student has practised the formulas.
For ICSE, the Class 10 syllabus also includes commercial mathematics (GST, Banking, and Shares and Dividends), matrices, geometric progressions, reflection in coordinate geometry, loci, constructions, and a larger mensuration and statistics section. ICSE students need steady weekly practice across all these areas. Cramming in the last two months does not work for them.
A good Class 10 maths tutor in Patna (and the same goes for a science tutor) will do three things in particular:
That notebook becomes the student's most useful revision tool in January. If maths is the main worry, our page on maths home tutors in Patna explains how subject-specialist support works.
In CBSE Science, Chemical Substances and World of Living carry 25 marks each. That means chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction and heredity. Light and Electricity follow at 12 and 13 marks. Chemistry rewards exact equations and names. Biology rewards clear, labelled diagrams and the right terminology. Physics rewards numerical practice with units written correctly. The paper also includes assertion–reason and case-based questions, so reading a short passage and applying a concept to it needs practice.
ICSE students sit three separate papers, so each science needs its own revision cycle. Practical work counts for 20 marks in each, so it deserves proper attention and should not be squeezed in at the last minute.
CBSE English has a very predictable structure:
Students lose marks mainly by going over word limits, using the wrong letter format, or retelling the story when the question asks for analysis. Timed writing practice every two weeks fixes most of this.
Social Science is split into four equal parts of 20 marks: History, Geography, Political Science and Economics. The paper has a mix of question types:
Map work is one of the most reliable scores in the whole exam, and one of the most neglected. Ten minutes of map practice twice a week from October onwards is enough. For long answers, students do well with a short introduction, three or four points under headings, and a one-line conclusion. That structure is what examiners look for.
For ICSE, History and Civics is one paper and Geography is another. Geography includes topographical map work, which needs regular hands-on practice.

ICSE families can use the same rhythm, adjusting it to their school's calendar and the CISCE timetable when it comes out. The aim is to finish the syllabus by early December, which leaves a proper revision window.
| Month | Main focus | What a home tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| April–May | Start Class 10 chapters; close Class 9 gaps (algebra basics, chemical formulae, grammar) | Diagnostic test in each subject; sets a weekly timetable the student can actually keep |
| June | Use the summer break to get ahead in Maths and Science | Covers one or two heavy chapters in advance (for example, quadratic equations or life processes) |
| July–August | Keep pace with school; first chapter tests | Weekly chapter tests, error notebook, and a short monthly written review for parents |
| September | Half-yearly or mid-term exams | Revises the first-term syllabus; goes through the school paper question by question afterwards |
| October–November | Finish the remaining syllabus; internal assessment work (portfolio, practicals, projects) | Makes sure no chapter is left "for later"; begins map practice and full-length writing tasks |
| December | Syllabus complete; first full sample papers | Sets timed papers under exam conditions and marks them strictly against the marking scheme |
| January | Pre-boards; revision in cycles | Two to three full papers per subject each week, targeted re-teaching of weak topics, error-notebook revision |
| February–March | Board examinations | Short, calm sessions between papers: formulae, diagrams, likely mistakes; no new topics |
CBSE publishes official sample question papers and marking schemes on its academic website. For 2026–27 these include Mathematics Standard, Mathematics Basic, Science, Social Science and English. CISCE publishes specimen question papers for ICSE. These are the most reliable guides to the format and style of questions, and they should be used before any commercial question bank.
The most useful routine has five steps:
Five papers done this way are worth more than twenty papers only glanced through.
Board examiners mark a large number of scripts, and a clear script is easier to credit. A few habits help:
Class 10 is often the first time a child faces a public examination. Relatives, neighbours and coaching conversations across Patna can make it feel bigger than it is. Some pressure helps a student focus, but too much leads to avoidance, poor sleep and careless mistakes. What parents can do:
A regular tutor also helps with stress in a quiet way. When doubts are cleared each week, they do not pile up into panic just before the exams.
The stream decision is usually made between the Class 10 results and the start of Class 11. It deserves more thought than simply "whatever marks allow". A good decision looks at four things:
Families aiming for engineering or medical entrance exams often start foundation work alongside Class 11. You can read how that works on our pages for a JEE home tutor in Patna and a NEET home tutor in Patna. For the board side of the senior years, see Class 12 home tuition in Patna.

A CBSE Class 10 tuition plan in Patna will work around the 80-mark board papers, the internal assessment components and the official sample papers. An ICSE Class 10 tutor in Patna will plan for three separate science papers, two English papers and ICSE's broader Mathematics syllabus. We match tutors to the board your child is studying, and to the subjects where help is needed most: all subjects, or only Maths and Science.
We offer one-to-one home tuition across Patna and online tuition for families who prefer it or whose timetable is tight. Tutors are matched by locality. For example, see our pages on home tutors in Kankarbagh, Boring Road and Rajendra Nagar. Many parents of Class 10 girls ask for a woman tutor. You can request a female home tutor in Patna, and we match one subject to availability in your locality.
Ajay Vatsyayan Classes has more than 12 years of teaching experience and has taught over 25,000 students across the organisation. In Patna we offer home and online tuition for Classes 1 to 12 in CBSE, ICSE/ISC and Bihar Board (BSEB), all subjects, along with JEE and NEET preparation. You can find an overview of our work on the Patna home tuition page. We do not publish fees on this page. Costs depend on the subjects, the number of sessions and the mode, and we discuss them with you after the demo class. For Bihar Board students, in Hindi or English medium, see our Bihar Board home tutor page.
The best time is April, when Class 10 begins, or even the last months of Class 9 if there are gaps in Maths or Science. Starting early allows the syllabus to finish by December with proper revision time. Starting in October or later is still useful, but the focus then shifts to high-weight chapters and sample papers.
Yes. The scheme began in 2026 and CBSE's circular for the 2027 examinations confirms it continues. The first examination in February–March is compulsory. The second, in May, is optional, and passed students can use it to improve in up to three subjects. Always check the latest CBSE circulars, as details can be updated.
For students in Class 10 in 2026–27, both options remain. Standard suits students who may take Mathematics in Class 11, especially for engineering or economics routes. Basic suits students sure they will not continue with Mathematics. Discuss it with the school, and ask how the choice affects Class 11 subject options. From 2027–28 the Basic/Standard split is being replaced by a common paper with an optional Advanced level.
Yes. We provide ICSE and ISC tuition as well as CBSE. ICSE tutors plan for its separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology papers, the two English papers, History, Civics and Geography, and the wider Mathematics syllabus including commercial mathematics.
Yes. Many families take a subject specialist for Maths and Science and manage English and Social Science with school support. We can also arrange tuition for all subjects if needed.
Most students do well with two to four sessions a week, depending on the number of subjects and how large the gaps are. The number usually rises from December, when full sample papers and pre-board revision begin. The tutor will suggest a schedule after the diagnostic test.
For a motivated student with a quiet space and a stable connection, online one-to-one tuition works well, especially for Maths and Science problem-solving with a digital board. Home tuition is often better for younger or easily distracted students, and for checking handwritten work and diagrams. Some families combine the two.
The tutor meets your child, teaches a short topic from the current syllabus, and checks a few basics to understand where they stand. You can see the teaching style, ask questions about the plan, and then decide whether to continue.
